Soul is the mysterious aspect of our being. It is the stamp of eternity on time. Soul does not scorn body or mind. It is, instead, the light of both. We may have a beautiful body and a powerful mind. But if both lack light, what's the use? To lack light is to be in darkness. Darkness of mind is worse than darkness of body. The absence of light means the inability to be fully oneself. Consider a dance maestro, doing an enhancing recital. All of a sudden the power fails and the lights go off. She is paralyzed into inaction. She is still the genius. But she cannot perform. If this state lasts for long, how will we know her genius from the mediocrity that surrounds her??
We don't have to be paralyzed geniuses and stay frozen in inaction. The light is within us. That light will never die out. We may not to turn to it and choose to live as though the light does not exist. But, by doing so, we reduce the scope of our whole being, including body and mind. As a result, we embrace the lie that we are good for nothing. That is what it is - a lie, a terrible lie, and nothing but a lie.
We are our true and complete selves when our body, mind and soul are in harmony. Harmony is an organic relationship. In such a relationship, the neglect of one part affects the other two too. If, say, soul is neglected, what is left is not two thirds of our personality but far, far less. The body and mind also get reduced. The body begins to be anarchic and the mind, depraved. We begin to prefer crude tastes and adopt subhuman attitudes. At the same time, we live tormented inwardly by self- revulsion. This inner unease is, paradoxically, a healthy thing. It is the cry of the soul that feels starved and choked. The right thing to do is to heed that cry and correct our ways.
