Does Pineapple Belong on Pizza or Have My Tastebuds Died?
If you had asked me that question growing up, my answer would have been an emphatic, "NO!" The very idea of putting fruit on what is typically a meat and cheese-fest seemed unthinkable. Yet, these days I always say "YES!" to fruit....or at least pineapples which are always welcome on my pizza.
They say as we get older, our taste buds become less sensitive. This is why often when eating an older person's food, I find it salty. In our household, we have a running joke, "Your tastebuds have died." Which is frequently said by the younger members of the household to the older members about strong-tasting food. Like sharp cheese (Bleu Cheese, anyone?). They say that since "our tastebuds have died," we turn to foods that will give us some sort of taste even if (to them) that food is repulsive. I have no idea whether that is or is not true. I do know that I enjoy foods today that I despised when I was younger. Could they be right? Perhaps, but that isn't going to stop me from eating the strongest, stinkiest cheese on a cracker or, in this case, pineapple on my Hawaiian pizza.
