The glass walls of Tech-Next Company's conference room were illuminated by the afternoon light streaming in onto the table. However, the atmosphere inside the room was anything but bright or calm. There was a palpable tension and heavy silence. Sitting on one side of the table was Abir, the young CEO of one of the country's top software development firms, 'Tech-Next', along with his three main associates. On the other side, Mr. Roberts, a representative of the international corporate giant 'Global Link', sat with a serious expression, accompanied by his legal advisor, working on a laptop and a diary.
For the past six months, Abir's company had been tirelessly working day and night to create a groundbreaking data security software. All their capital, labor, and dreams were tied to this project. If the deal was successful, Tech-Next would establish itself in the international market, but if it failed, the company would face significant financial losses. On the other hand, this software was crucial for a large institution like Global Link, as they had recently experienced several cyberattacks on their servers.
Mr. Roberts closed the file and placed his glasses on the table. Looking at Abir, he spoke in a rather cool tone, “Abir, the software you've developed is undoubtedly excellent. Our technical team has reviewed it and is very satisfied. However, we have some stringent constraints as a business deal. We cannot pay more than 20 million Taka for this project. Additionally, we have no time; we want the entire system live on our global server within the next 15 days. If you're agreeable to these conditions, we will sign the deal today; otherwise, we'll have to look for alternatives.”
At Mr. Roberts' sudden demand, the rest of Abir's team went pale. The estimated cost to create and operate this software had been set at a minimum of 30 million Taka. Moreover, it would take at least 30 days to securely install and test the entire system on the Global server. Working in a rush within 15 days could risk significant errors or bugs in the system, which could be catastrophic for the company's reputation.
The finance manager of Abir's team signaled under the table for him to cancel the deal, as working at that price would lead to major losses for the company. But Abir did not rush. He looked deeply into Roberts’ face and realized that Roberts was not making an unreasonable demand but was under pressure from his own company's budget and timing constraints. A typical businessman might have lost their temper here or simply walked out of the meeting by saying ‘no’. But Abir knew that the key to a successful negotiation or deal is solving the other party’s core issue without incurring one's own losses.
After contemplating for a moment with his eyes closed, Abir sat up straight with a gentle smile. He looked at Roberts and said, “Mr. Roberts, I completely understand your situation. We respect how crucial cybersecurity is for firms like Global Link right now, and we recognize the importance of time. You need delivery within 15 days to ensure your current operations aren’t stalled, and your budget is precise. We honor both these requests of yours.”
Roberts appeared somewhat surprised. He thought Abir might be stubborn about negotiating a higher price. Curiously, he asked, “So what’s your proposal, Abir?”
Abir turned his laptop towards Roberts, saying, “My proposal is that we will deliver the core part of the software, which is the 'Core Security Module', to you within the next 15 days. This will provide 100% security for your main server, ensuring that your work does not stall for even a day. However, the remaining advanced features and analytics tools will be added as live updates on the back-end over the next 15 days. This meets your time requirement and ensures the quality of our work remains impeccable.”
Roberts nodded and said, “Hmm, this is doable. But what about the budget? I can’t go over 20 million Taka.”
Abir relaxed and replied, “The budget will remain at 20 million Taka. However, in exchange for this special concession, we have a small condition. This software is highly complex, so for the next three years, the responsibility for its maintenance, cloud hosting support, and security upgrades will solely rest with our company. There will be a fixed service fee each year for this, which will not put any pressure on your current budget, and you will also receive long-term, reliable technical support.”
Listening to Abir’s excellent idea or win-win proposal, Roberts’ legal advisor whispered something in his ear. The serious expression on Roberts' face faded. He understood that Abir had resolved their budget and time issues, while simultaneously securing a future revenue stream for his own company. Neither party lost; rather, both sides benefited.
Mr. Roberts stood up from his chair and extended his hand towards Abir with a broad smile. He said, “Outstanding, Abir! I have faced many complex individuals in business discussions, but the way you calmly safeguarded the interests of both parties is truly commendable. Because of your foresight, we are not just signing this deal, but will also consider working with you on our future projects.”
The deal was finalized through a handshake between the two parties. The heavy atmosphere in the conference room instantly transformed into one filled with joy and relief, echoing with applause. Abir proved that, instead of stubbornness or anger, it is indeed possible to turn any difficult situation into a successful agreement through intelligence, empathy, and the right strategy.
