You Can't Eat Broken Promises.
I'm typing this on Sunday, the 5th of November 2023.
It's currently 1:35am and I'm tired, but I am playing a computer game called Starfield.
It's an RPG similar to Fallout 4 and Skyrim only set in the future and in space, but not as good as those other too games.
I am about to go to bed soon, but I thought I would just finish "one more quest"(tm). If you've played these games, you'll know what I am talking about.
Broken Promises
Before I head to bed, I'll explain why I decided to stay up late instead of going to bed early.
See, I'd applied for several jobs for today via work apps.
I'd just remembered that it woulsd have caused quite the overlap of they'd all been accepted.
One was with a new company. They were looking for people with forklift licences, but also people who could use pallet jacks and trollies to transport stuff for a convention this week. I don't have a forklift licence, and having failed ony first attempt last year, I am reluctant to try again for a while. Maybe next year. But it's worth applying for the job just in case.
The job would have started at 7am and gone on until 7pm. 12 hours at Sunday rates is good money.
However, they hadn't confirmed the shift to anyone and there were even a few complaints in the comments section of the app. They advertised the position on Thursday. You'd think they would have made their selection on Friday so that people could move on with their lives.
Upon waking up, I find this shift to have been cancelled.
Another shift for today was being a gate attendant for a convention. This was either cancelled or given to someone else.
Either way, there was no paid work for today.
What I did do instead was volunteer my time at a local soup kitchen called Fred's Van.
Monday there is another To Be Confirmed shift that has yet to be confirmed and it's now Sunday night at 11:22pm.
My plan is to turn up early and speak to someone directly about it. From my experience last year, they are incredibly unorganised, but by me being their physically they are more inclined to have me start early.
The instructions on the app were incredibly vague, but the location should be the same as last year.
This is a speculative shift, and I have applied for work at this particular venue for nearly every day of the rest of November.
Promises You Can Eat
However, as the title of this post suggests, "you can't eat broken promises".
Speculative shifts can be cancelled at any time and there's a tendency to not apply for other genuinely guaranteed shifts, "just in case" there is a conflict.
The phrase above and the inspiration for this post came from a genuine offer of guaranteed work for Tuesday. It will clash with a speculative shift, but I can't eat speculative food with speculative money from speculative shifts.
The guaranteed shift has to take precedence. I applied and locked in the Tuesday shift.
Certainty will always outweigh uncertainty.
We'll see what happens in the morning...
Stay tuned.
Until next time,
Thank you for reading.
