I’m down AU$26,000 from where I was 6 months ago, when I was working at the call centre and all I have managed to do is slow things down a little.
For this post though, I will go back to the end of last year and explain where a lot of this started, where I am at, what I have achieved, my philosophies and my influences.
My plan for 2023 was to work every day of the year. What I didn’t factor in was that in Adelaide, people tend to go on extended holidays around Christmas and New Year’s and often don’t start their year up again until halfway through January and sometimes even up to February.
There was no work for me then, and I was being lied to by a company called Pinnacle People. They’d been exclusively hiring Indian students because one of the higher up staff had a fetish for Indian men. I was told that I was only hired for the Royal Adelaide Show and nothing more. I had to beg a now former employee to change the settings on my account to offer me more work.
I was so pissed off.
I was being devalued but I didn’t have a name for it until I started watching YouTube videos by Sam Vaknin. He’s a rather controversial figure, but knows his stuff when it comes to psychology.
He has videos with great, actionable life advice.
Another good book I read was called ”Unfuck Yourself” by .
I started to slowly implement the advice from these sources and apply for jobs everywhere. I managed to land a few job interviews with some event based companies, and even the call centre mentioned above. The call centre job made me sick with anxiety attacks so I decided to put my health first.
I don’t mean in the greedy, selfish, or libertarian sense either.
It’s about no longer accepting poor treatment and abuse by others.
It’s about recognising when we are devaluing ourselves and others and to stop doing that.
It’s about looking after our mental and physicial health and general wellbeing.
It’s about making positive life choices and pivoting to give yourself the best opportunities in life.
It’s about not hesitating when it comes to getting something fixed or implementing positive changes or appying for a better job.
Easier said than done, but it’s worth doing.
I started listening to people offering different bits of advice amd acting on it. I not only have a Responsible Service Of Alcohol certificate, I have a Responsible Person Badge. I’ve also recently completely a barista course and I have enrolled to do a basic gaming licence course in January. I’ll do the advanced version when Inget the chance but that is held in a suburb a long way away from where I live.
My Uncle suggest I get into Aged Care and I recently overheard someone say it was paying more money than other jobs and offers more hours. I’ll need to get a car at some point to eliminate even more barriers to employment. Others have suggested getting a moped as an easier, cheaper option perhaps?
There’s a lot to consider and weigh up, but those are future challenges.
For many people, putting themselves first is how they operate, but for those of use who seek to be percieved as “good people” or have been exposed to religion in childhood, there is a tendency to put other people first to the point of our own downfall.
We tolerate abuse, put downs and generally bad treatment just to maintain the peace. That needed to end.
I also had to let go of who I thought I was, in favour of providing the best value I could to the wider community.
I never had any wish to get into hospitality, for example, as it meant needing to learn new skills amd confronting old ridiculous fears and blasting them to pieces. I can do 3 plate carry and 5 plate clear now (thank you YouTube), I can pour a beer properly and carry a drinks tray.
I’m also slowly learning the computer systems behind the Ticketek counter and learning better customer service at the same time, while getting paid to access sporting events.
It’s amazing how lazy people can be, and trust me I am no exception to this, but it’s shocking how many people just do not turn up for work consistently or think that a work place is too far to travel. This leaves an exploitable gap where you can step in and thrive.
Throughout my life I have changed and reinvented myself and my points of view and I am sure you have too.
Letting go of fears and self doubts help to turn your life around. It’s what’s working for me.
Thank you for reading.
Until next time,
Big thumbs up!
