As previously posted about, it's been an interesting week.
The disappointment, devaluing and false promises of the recruitment agency threatened to spoil my day, but I stayed in the city because I'd agreed to go to the Cranker Comedy night to support fellow graduates of the comedy workshop I'd attended.
The rain, coupled with flat surfaces, meant that that I'd been trying not to slip over all day. Today has been dry by comparison.
It was a great night, and my friends did really well on stage.
Especially since it was the first time for one of them.
Someone watching the show recommended one of them to the venue owner of the Laugh Lounge.
Something that hasn't happened to me yet, but I think this is because I'm rusty. Two years of self imposed lockdown will do that.
After the event was over I got to hang out with veteran comedian Fiona O'Laughlin, and when she found out that I had been trained in stand up comedy by Glynn Nicholas, she added me to Facebook.
I really shouldn't name drop, but another comedian was giving me grief so it came out as passive aggressive defensive move.
There was an email earlier today, Friday, of a job going to help out on the Murray Princess for a week.
The Murray Princess is a paddle steamer that travels the River Murray. Imagine a 4 storey, old timey designed hotel gently gliding down the river.
I would have had to have gone back into the city, picked up my uniform again and then planned a coach to Mannum in order to board the... ship. It's too big to be considered a boat and it's not really an appropriate way to address a princess.
They were looking for kitchen hands and housekeepers, but I don't have those skills nor do I know where to even get that experience. I worked out the hourly rate and it would be slightly less than what I was earning before, but I can't really knock back anything at this stage.
It turns out that the recruitment agency only hires you for specific jobs based on your skillset and won't offer anything outside of what you've done previously, so I am locked into working at the Royal Adelaide Show literally shoveling bullshit...
I occasionally like remind myself that I have an I.T. degree.
Right now, I'm at a The Rhino Room, a comedy venue, to support friends. I was supposed to buy a ticket online, but was told I could pay cash at the door.
I left to find an ATM and got some cash out, came back to find no one at the entrance so I just went up stairs. I bought a few drinks to cover my entry anyway, so I don't feel bad and they are still in front financially.
I realised that I had been running on adrenaline for the last month or so, blistered and anxious, and now that its over my mood nose dived into dangerously dark territory.
A night out at a comedy venue is just what the doctor ordered to improve my mood somewhat. I also saw that the Rhino Room has a Laugh Lab open mic every Monday night, and I really need the stage time to get better.
Things will get better and I am smart enough to find my way forward, I just need a clearer headspace.
Thanks for reading.
