A Return To Comedy

It was a split second decision. My mind was screaming at me to just go home. The loud inner voice reminding me of the easy path; the comfort zone of mediocrity.

I was standing in Rundle Mall in front of a sign advertising that tonight the Laugh Lounge Comedy Club was holding a stand up comedy night as they do every Saturday night.

That night, my friend and comedian Marc Ryan AKA The Beautiful Bogan was going to be hosting and a few other friends were going to be on stage too.

Instead of listening to the loud, self defeatist, inner voice I chose to listen to the quiet inner voice that said "Go for it! What's the worst that could happen?"

It was a small decision to buy a ticket and see the show, but it was based on a deeper desire to get back into stand up comedy in general. If I didn't do this now, I would just keep procrastinating and never get anywhere.

I hadn't seen Marc in a few years, the last time was during the graduation of the School Of Hard Knock Knocks comedy course I did in 2019. Alumni of the course are often invited back to talk to new students about their experience and he gave a presentation.

I scanned the QR code and bought the ticket before going up several flights of stairs. At the top of the stairs, I was greeted by the owner of the club who said my full name questioningly.

I confirmed who I was, still a little taken aback by the speed of the internet and I had noticed that my full name was written on his list. The ink must have still been wet...

He directed me to my table and asked if I'd like a drink, etc.
I was somewhat early so I ordered a drink and looked around.
In front of me was an electronic candle flickering away in the centre of the table, in fact there was one on every table.

Five minutes later, Marc Ryan turned up. He recognised me, even remembering my name and we chatted about comedy and he gave me some cool tips in regards to comedy and before excusing himself to get a drink and talk to the manager.

Later Geraldine, a friend I caught up with earlier in the day, turned up and sat at the table. She ordered a bowl of wedges to share and a beer for herself and a non alcoholic drink for me.

Before long, someone introduced Marc to the stage where he started to host and warm up the crowd.

Before long, a string of comedians, many that I knew, including henrywilson@henrywilson who was once on Steem many years ago, were introduced and had played their sets on stage.

Many were quite impressive and there were one or two that make a living full time doing comedy, something that I would love to do when my confidence levels get better.

Upon reflection, my stage fright comes from a fear of judgement and it's something that I am currently working on.

It was a great night out with big laughs and good friends.
A small, split second decision that made my night and cemented my decision to return to comedy and into hopefully a life of adventure.

I'm even looking at redoing a few comedy courses to improve my joke material and microphone skills.

I hope this inspires you to also chase your dreams, and leave the comfort zone far, far behind.

It's never too late.

Until next time,

Shaidon.
