Lagos, the center of excellence is one place you should go to if you are tired of taking life too seriously. I have had multiple weird experiences in Lagos and I laugh so hard when I remember them. I'm just going to share one of them with you.
In June of 2017, back when I was still in high school. I was at the park, waiting for a tricycle (it's called "Keke'' in Nigeria) to take me to the next park. My school was a good distance away from my house. It was in another local government area. Usually, you have to struggle to get into a tricycle if you do not want to be late for school. That day was no different. I had fought unsuccessfully to get into five tricycles but other people got in before me.
I was ready for the sixth one. I struggled to get a space in the back seat and I got it. Halfway through the journey, we got stuck in traffic and the tricycles formed another lane so that they could move faster.
Our driver tried to join the new line ahead of the next driver who was trying to overtake him. In the process, they collided with each other. Our driver lost one of his front lights and the other driver lost his side mirror.
They both came out of their tricycles and started fighting, leaving us in the middle of the road. They were punching and wrestling, while other vehicles plying the road kept honking for them to fight elsewhere.
Two minutes later, both drivers left the dry land and jumped into the nearest gutter to continue fighting. That was where I died.
We were still in the middle of the road with angry drivers honking.
People had gathered around to watch the small show, but nobody attempted to separate them. After another five minutes of wrestling, they came out of the gutter by themselves. They were still throwing insults at each other.
Our driver came back to his tricycle and attempted to continue driving. "Sorry oh, he is a madman. He forgot to take his drugs before coming out. Mad People Everywhere," he said.
I quietly came down from the tricycle and trekked the rest of the way to the park as I could not stand the stench. Other passengers followed suit.
While walking, I wondered why a madman would tag another person like him as "a madman." It was beyond my understanding.
But then I remembered what my best friend told me. He said, "Don't think too much about the experiences you have in Lagos. Your mind would not comprehend them."
Thanks for reading, much love 😘😘
