A SINGLE DECISION WIPED OUT YEARS OF HARD WORK AND SAVINGS …. !!
Have you ever watched your life savings disappear while feeling completely helpless or powerless to stop it ?
Many years ago, I thought my financial future was secure. After years of hard work and careful saving, I felt confident that the difficult days were behind me. Looking back today, I realize that confidence was based more on hope than reality. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, investing in bank shares was very popular in Nigeria. Everywhere I turned, people were talking about the profits they were making. Friends, colleagues, and financial advisers all seemed convinced that bank stocks were the safest path to wealth.
At first, I stayed away because I knew very little about the stock market. Everything changed when I visited my younger brother, who worked in the banking sector. He had just purchased a brand-new car, and naturally I was curious about how he could afford it.
His answer was simple: dividends from bank shares. He explained how much he had earned and spoke confidently about the future of bank stocks. Like many others at the time, he believed prices would continue rising. His enthusiasm was contagious, and before long I decided to invest.
Encouraged by the seemingly endless rise in share prices, I did not buy shares in just one bank; I invested in three different banks because I wanted to maximize my returns. Initially, everything appeared to be working perfectly. The value of the shares kept increasing, and I began to feel that I had made one of the best financial decisions of my life. Unfortunately, life had other plans; without warning, the banking stock market crashed and investments that people had built over many years lost a significant portion of their value.
The shock was devastating for many families. People who had been planning comfortable futures suddenly found themselves facing uncertainty. My family and I were also affected. The experience was painful and disappointing. I spent many days asking myself difficult questions. Why had I become so confident? Why had I relied so heavily on one type of investment? Why did I assume the good times would continue indefinitely? Although the financial loss hurt deeply, it also became one of the greatest learning experiences of my life.
The first lesson was the importance of diversification. No matter how promising an investment may appear, placing too much money in one area can be risky. The second lesson was to avoid being carried away by excitement and greed. When profits are rising, it is easy to believe that success will continue forever. The third lesson was even more important: money is valuable, but life is far more valuable. Financial setbacks can be painful, but they should never destroy our peace of mind or our determination to keep moving forward.
Most importantly, I learned that setbacks are not the end of the journey. Sometimes life forces us to begin again, and while starting over is difficult, it is often possible with patience, discipline, and faith.
Fortunately, the crash happened while I was still young enough to work and rebuild. The process was not easy, but I accepted reality and gradually moved forward. Looking back today, I am grateful that I refused to surrender.
Of the three banks I invested in, one was eventually acquired by a foreign bank and has provided little return since then. Another survived but has never fully recovered from the effects of the crash. The third continues to perform reasonably well and still pays dividends. Some people have advised me to sell the non-performing shares, while others suggest holding them. For now, I continue to hold them, not because I expect miracles, but because they remind me of an important chapter in my life.
Today, when I think about that painful experience, I no longer focus only on the money I lost. Instead, I focus on the strength I discovered within myself. The experience taught me resilience, patience, and the determination to keep moving forward regardless of setbacks. If there is one message I would like readers to take away from my story, it is this: invest wisely, learn continuously, and never allow temporary failures to define your future. We may fall, but with courage and persistence, we can rise again. What happened to me reminds me of a popular hook while growing up, "every disappointment is a blessing" ... and I tend to agree.
