From a distance it watched me...
I wasn't sure what it was.. maybe a person, or an animal? But I was sure that this figure watched me, and keenly too.
So I didn't move. I figured maybe it would go away after having it's fill of me.. or maybe it won't. However, I still didn't move. I chose not to, or so I thought.. until I realized..
It wasn't just me choosing not to move. Because apart from my fear for what any movement I make might make this thing do, I also was completely powerless from my waist down. I realized probably couldn't even move if I wanted to.
And soon as I realized this, a funny feeling came to the fore. A part of me suddenly yearned to close the distance between me and this figure. It suddenly felt like the thing to do.
But try as much as I could, I couldn't move.
Then I noticed the figure started coming closer, and closer, and closer still.
I felt a heavy weight upon me, as I summoned all the will that I could muster to move...
Then I heard my name...
...
...
I stood just outside the glass door and watched her. She just lay there on the bed, strapped with multiple wires, powered by machines. My Annabelle...
The tears began to well up in my eyes again, but I fought it. I had to go in and see her. I had to. It had been three weeks now since the accident happened, and I had been coming here every single day. Still, I have yet to summon enough courage to go in the room. Not enough courage.. I felt like a coward. Maybe I was one.
If only she'd just open her eyes. Her bed was turned, and her head rested on the side. If she could just opened her eyes, she would see me.
I closed my eyes, and the last conversation we had returned to me...
"You know you don't have to go Annie."
It was a girl's slumber night at her best friend's place, and I really hadn't wanted her to spend the night out.
"Don't be a baby now Frank, you know I am always with you..." she paused, and place her hands on my chest. "...here"
"But how do I get reminded of that" I had asked, prolonging the conversation, not wanting her to leave yet...
But then she had smiled, that smile that would forever be her weapon against me. She had smiled, and she had said..
"Just call me by my name, and you will know."
I opened my eyes, and with renewed conviction, I pushed open the glass door, and walked slowly to Anna. With every step, it felt as though a weight was being lifted off of me.
And finally, I was standing just above her. I barely noticed the nurse who had also stepped quietly into the room.
All I knew was this was Annabelle... My Annabelle... and I would be devastated without her.
So I did the only thing I could do...
I called out to her...
"Annabelle..."
And like a dream, she opened her eyes...
So the writer's block that I get these days is compounded with the fact that so much is currently going on at work, and I am struggling to keep up with my writings.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this read. I built it up from one of the 100 word stories I wrote sometime back.
Cheers!
