Yeah, it's Friday - #newtunes time! U2, Interpol, Primal Scream, Ty Segall, The Sick Man Of Europe, Sweeping Promises, Johnny Marr, Yoo Doo Right.
There’s always new music out there, from well-known names to up-and-coming and even completely new artists. Any one of them could be the next big thing.
The best way to find out is to jump in and listen for yourself.
Here are eight songs for anyone who loves discovering new music. If one stands out to you, feel free to look into it further.

The song is one of the latest products of the U2 machine. It is a cover of a 1988 song by The Pogues, with lyrics written by Shane MacGowan. The song is about a relationship, regret, an apology, and a plea for forgiveness: Shane admits that he was cold, that he lied and hurt someone, and now he’s asking to be forgiven before it’s too late.
The song serves as a preview of the tribute album 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan, scheduled for release this November. Along with U2, the album will also include Springsteen, Tom Waits, Hozier, The Libertines, Dropkick Murphys and a few other artists. Fifty per cent of the album's royalty payments will be donated to the Dublin Simon Community (an organization which assists people who are homeless), an issue that was important to MacGowan.

Interpol is an American band from New York; they formed in 1997 and have released eight studio albums to date. They’re known for their dark and elegant post-punk indie sound, featuring resonant guitar riffs, a pronounced bass line, and cool vocals. They’ve sometimes been called “the last hope for guitar-driven rock music.” Well, I don’t know—guitar music is still around and very much alive, if you ask me.
The song “Wake Up” is from their latest album, This Mirror Weighs a Ton, which was released a week ago. It’s a bit more rhythmic and playful, but still unmistakably Interpol.

Primal Scream is a Scottish band from Glasgow that has been playing since 1982. To date, they have released twelve studio albums, plus several compilations and remixes. In music circles, they’re known for changing band members as well as their sound and style. They started with indie pop, later moved on to garage and hard rock, then psychedelia, rave, and dub, and finally aggressive techno-industrial.
The song “Kill All Hippies” is actually from 2000, off the album XTRMNTR; it’s not a remix, but they’re using it to announce their XTRMNTR 2006 tour. A wild beat, pure techno, and hard-hitting rock all in one. I just had to add it :)

Ty Segall is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, and producer from Laguna Beach, California. He has been involved in music practically since childhood and began releasing music officially in 2006. He started as a one-man band but has also performed with many other, lesser-known groups. He is extremely creative; on his own, under his own name (or as the Ty Segall Band), he has released 18 albums, and even more in collaboration with others. Among music critics, he is considered one of the key modern musicians who define genres such as garage rock, psychedelic rock, and punk.
The song “Let Go” is from his latest album, Chrome, which was released a week ago; on it, after years of experimenting with various styles, he returns to his roots. Heavy, dirty, and distorted guitar riffs are paired with warped production. It (the entire album) really reminds me of Nirvana’s early songs, back when they weren’t yet a global sensation.

The Sick Man of Europe is a London-based music project that has been active since 2023. A new band for me. They usually perform as a trio and have released one EP and two albums to date. Their sound blends post-punk, krautrock, art rock, and minimalist electronica, drawing influence from Bauhaus, Joy Division, Neu!, Suicide, and Swans.
The song “Chromophobia” is a single from their second album, The Intermittent Signal, which was released last week. “Chromophobia” means a fear of color—in their own words, “the fear of seeing things as they really are.”

Sweeping Promises is an American band from Boston that has been performing since 2019. They play post-punk, indie rock, and new wave. A couple of years ago, I mentioned them in #newtunes when they released their second album. Two weeks ago, they released their third album, You Say I Romanticize, on SubPop.
The song “Cocoon” is a single from the third album. It has an energetic and rhythmic sound with a powerful bassline, a sharp guitar riff, and reverb. Compared to their previous album, the sound is “fuller” and “richer,” with a more “live” feel. Yeah, that’s a SubPop.

Johnny Marr is an English guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Manchester. I think he’s better known to listeners as the guitarist and co-songwriter for The Smiths. After The Smiths broke up, he collaborated with The Pretenders, The The, Modest Mouse, and many others; he launched his solo career in 2013, and it continues to thrive today. He has a very distinctive playing style—he’s not your typical solo guitarist, but instead of long solos, he builds melodies and textures. To date, he has released four studio albums, and with the song “It’s Time,” he is previewing his fifth, The Age of Everything. It’s an energetic, at times even euphoric guitar anthem that addresses global issues and rebellion born of idealism.

Yoo Doo Right is a Canadian experimental/post-rock duo from Montreal. They have been playing together since 2016 - a new band for me. They took the name from a song by the German krautrock band Can. To date, they have released three studio albums. Their sound is a blend of post-rock, krautrock, shoegaze, and psychedelic rock—long, hypnotic tracks featuring dense walls of guitar, driving rhythms, effects, and repetitive structures.
The song “Doldrums, Doldrums, Eviler Than the Devil” is a single previewing their fourth album, Build and Rest by the Shepherd’s Light, set for release in early November of this year. The song is a hypnotic blend of psychedelia and krautrock featuring heavy riffs and restless rhythms.
