It's Friday and time for #newtunes!👇
I spent the whole day in the sun, working in the orchard and the field. And now, in the evening, I'm listening to the fresh music (and drinking cold beer). What more could you wish for?
Every week (almost), I discover new songs from top-charting artists, hidden gems, and unknown voices - all competing for a moment of your time. Could one of them become the next global hit?
The only way to know is to dive in and listen for yourself :)

The iconic American psychedelic/noise-rock band Butthole Surfers isn’t done yet. A couple of weeks ago, they released the album Astronaut Verzion, which features some old recordings that had been sitting in a drawer. The same goes for this song, written in 2021 for the album Weird Revolution. The song - or rather, the lyrics - are, of course, self-deprecating (like most of their lyrics). It sounds like a mix of garage rock, electronica, and their signature madness, while the video looks like a delirium tremens nightmare.

Yello is a Swiss electronic duo from Zurich. They are among the pioneers of synth/electro pop, a genre they have been creating since 1979, though they are often overlooked outside of Europe. They have a very distinctive, playful, and recognizable sound—a mix of synth-pop, new wave, techno, jazz influences, Dadaist humor, and cinematic atmosphere. They’ve released 14 studio albums, the most recent in 2020.
The song “Around The Sun” is their first new single in six years—maybe a new album is coming soon? Who knows?

The Maestros are a new band to me. They’re from Yorkshire, England. They’ve been playing since 2022 and have released one EP so far. Old-school garage/rock ’n’ roll. Their style is a bit like the Stray Cats, but with a modern garage twist.
The song “Pump Me Up” is their new single, released two weeks ago. Pure rock 'n' roll without any production gimmicks - just riffs, a beat, and energy.

Keyside is a young band from Liverpool, England - a new name to me. Since 2022, they’ve been playing melodic indie rock/pop and singing about emotional honesty, youthful energy, nightlife, and personal themes. So far, they’ve released one EP and a few singles.
The song “Cocodamol” was released a week ago and serves as a teaser for their debut album. Incidentally, “Cocodamol” is Liverpool slang for a combination of acetaminophen and codeine (it can be a painkiller or a drug). In the song, it’s a metaphor for nighttime relief or an escape from reality.

Netherwilds is a new Canadian band from Toronto, formed in 2024 as a side project of singer and guitarist David Monks from Tokyo Police Club - a new name for me. So far, they’ve released a few singles that together form a medieval fantasy saga. They describe their sound as “Peasant Metal”—a fun, theatrical mix of thrash, black, and death metal, punk energy, and medieval fantasy. The lyrics are full of humor, feudal lords, peasants, goats, and dark fantasy themes. The sound is raw, energetic, and a lot of fun—as if Black Sabbath had met Monty Python.
The song “Return The Goat” went viral on TikTok and in metal communities precisely because of this unique “peasant metal” concept—a blend of serious metal and absurd humor. I’m looking forward to their debut album, which is scheduled for release this fall.

Thistle is a young English band from Northampton. They’ve been playing since 2023 and have released a few singles and one EP so far—the EP came out last year. A new name to me. They play what’s known as grunge-gaze, indie rock with strong shoegaze and post-rock influences. Their sound is melodic and melancholic, featuring loud guitar riffs, dreamy vocals, and ’90s energy (like a mix of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine).
The song “Over the Garden Wall” is their new single, released six days ago. The title is a reference to the American animated series of the same name, which is full of a magical, dark, and nostalgic atmosphere - the song captures a similar sense of mystery and melancholy.

I mentioned The Broken Radios last week in #newtunes. The band is from Southport, England. They’ve been playing for a few years now, since 2020, and this year they’ve even released two studio albums. Their sound is energetic, with powerful guitar riffs and melancholic, reflective lyrics. It’s reminiscent of a mix of Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, and more contemporary British bands.
The song “The Machines Fall Silent” is from their latest album, Machines Fall, Dreams Remain, which was released a week ago. The sound is dynamic, with a powerful chorus and atmospheric guitar work. I like the song, but I can’t shake the feeling that AI has played a significant role in its creation.

And finally, Madra Salach, an Irish band from Dublin. A new name for me. They’ve been playing since 2023 and released one EP so far, this past January. They quickly became popular on the Irish scene (and beyond) thanks to their powerful live performances. Their music is very intense, emotional, and atmospheric - contemporary Irish folk with elements of drone-folk, post-folk, and a slight alternative/indie influence.
The song “The Man Who Seeks Pleasure” is from their first EP, and it explores the duality of hedonism - they say that pleasure and pain are often intertwined. The video was filmed in London at The Dome.
