Kauai is a beautiful place there is no doubt that, however one of the more unique aspects of the island is its resident feral or wild chicken population. They are everywhere, pretty much every place you go there are chickens. For the most part they are fearless, wandering up to you looking for a handout.
As the story goes, there was a chicken farm on the island at one point and due to flooding the chickens escaped and started to bread. Due to the lack of natural predators on the island, the local feral cats just ignore the chickens. The chickens infest everything. There are signs posted everywhere saying don't feed the chickens.
On such encounter I had with the chickens was in a parking lot waiting for my lunch at food truck. Someone had discarded a Kinder Surprise plastic egg rapper and the local rooster and his hens were guarding it as iff it was a real egg. It was very funny to watch.
Just one more example how human actions impact the somewhat natural world.
