Have you all heard of bamboo shoots?
The plant in the thumbnail is exactly that!
It is a very familiar food for Japanese people, but may not be familiar to other co
untries.
These bamboo shoots can only be harvested from April to May, and by mid-May, they either suddenly start to rot or grow up to one meter per day, becoming inedible and hard.
I was asked to stay and help with the harvesting of these mysterious bamboo shoots for a month.
I'm on the computer every day, so I thought it would be a nice change of pace and muscle training.
I had to cut back on my other work to prepare for this.
** But within a week of starting, I was fired! **
I'll leave that explanation for later, but first let me tell you where and how I was harvesting bamboo shoots!
I went to Kagawa Prefecture, which is located next to Kochi Prefecture.
Kagawa Prefecture is famous for udon, a dish known to all Japanese people.
It is the soul food of Kagawa Prefecture, where thick noodles are served in a broth made by boiling dried fish and soy sauce.
It is more refreshing than ramen.
Sometimes curry is used for the soup, and there are many other arrangements.
The place I came to was a peaceful town called Kannonji. The area is flat and has more rice paddies and fields than the area where I usually live, giving the impression that the distance between houses is greater.
I stayed at the house with the red roof in the photo.
The photo shows the scenery of the area, udon, a soul food, and okonomiyaki, which I was treated to on the first day.
First, we searched for bamboo shoots in the bamboo grove, and when we found them, we dug them out with a shovel, cutting off the roots. This year seemed to be a bad harvest year, and we could not find any bamboo shoots at all; we spent two hours in the mountains and found only two to five. The owner said that usually there are more bamboo shoots in the forest.
Next, we cleanly cut off the roots and peels.
The image of the roots is so disgusting that people with a phobia of aggregates would collapse.
If you are a Splinterlands player, it would be easier to understand if I say "roots like QUEEN MYCELIA". If you're curious, do a search!
Then boil them in boiling water for 30 minutes.
Then immediately cool in cold water for 30 minutes.
Finally, the processed bamboo shoots are packed and shipped.
The whole process is easy once you learn it.
If you look closely, you will notice that I have a scar on my arm, but it is not because I cut my wrist in desperation after losing a battle during streaming!
I scraped it on a bamboo bush. There is only so much I can do to be careful.
Now, the story you've been waiting for, the story of how I got fired!!
Up to this point in the story, you would have thought that the job was easy, okonomiyaki and udon noodles were a treat, and the environment was good for anyone reading this.
But there was a deep darkness here.
I should have realized it from day one, first of all.
Before I went to help, I was told that there was no accommodation fee, but on the day of the event, the old lady who owns the bamboo grove told me I had to pay.
I tried to protest, saying, "That's not what they told me," but I was talked out of it and it was decided that I would pay. I was reluctant to pay because I didn't want to damage our relationship from the first day.
I reflected on the fact that I usually don't go out and communicate directly with people, so I couldn't express my opinion when the situation called for it.
Another person was supposed to arrive late, but he cancelled the meeting because he had a back injury.
I thought it was inevitable, but she was very upset.
I thought it would stop after one day, but he kept repeating the same complaints on the second, third, and fourth days.
I was naturally pressured and neurotic.
The owner of the bamboo grove had contacted the introducer that had introduced us to agricultural help several times to complain and complain, so on the fifth day, the introducer told her that they would send a new person in a week. Perhaps they were looking hard.
I don't think it's easy to suddenly find someone who is free for a month.
However, by that time, she realized that this was a bad year for bamboo shoots, and he felt that neither the newcomer nor I were needed.
She had been awkwardly buying me something or asking me to take a break, and I had the feeling that she was taking care of me, but this feeling had completely disappeared.
By this time, I had a feeling that something bad was about to happen.
I now wish I had consulted the introducer earlier.
They said they would give me the 6th day off. But that's just as well. Even though I go digging every day, there are hardly any bamboo shoots. So I had to wait for them to grow.
The bamboo grove owner and his wife probably thought it was no exaggeration to say that I had not done anything yet. I could sense from their conversation that they thought I was just playing games on the laptop computer I had brought with me.
I felt sorry for them, so I cleaned toilets and tended to the kitchen.
I felt the silent pressure from them to do something, which is peculiar to the Japanese, but since I had never worked in agriculture before, I could not do anything unless they explained it to me.
And if they told me to do something outside of my contract and I got hurt, they would have to take responsibility. They knew this, so they couldn't tell me what to do.
I tried my best to have a dialogue with them, hoping they would change their minds, but their old-fashioned stereotypes far outweighed my efforts to persuade them.
I asked them, "Maybe I should just go home." But they stopped me because they thought there was a possibility that a lot of bamboo shoots might grow out of nowhere.
On the seventh day, after digging the bamboo shoots and completing the subsequent work, I asked the bamboo grove owner's old woman to check on them.
She warned me that I had cut off too much of the roots and peel of the bamboo shoots.
I said, "I'm sorry, I'll be careful next time," and apologized.
But after that, he continued to berate me about the same thing.
"What a waste!"
"It's terrible to treat a sale like this."
"Why can't you do it after I've explained it to you so many times?"
"Why can't you do such a simple thing?"
............................
After 10 times, I stopped responding. To be honest, from my point of view, it's not a big deal. I am a hobbyist cook, so I understand that it is not such a terrible mistake.
After being told the same warning about 30 times, he yelled at me, "Are you listening to me? something snapped inside me.
I said, "If you insist that much, I won't do it anymore. I can't do this work anymore.
I had said it reflexively. After I said it, I came back to myself.
She yelled at me** "Then go home !!!!" **
She was yelling at me. After that, she turned into a half-crazy old woman in the shape of a demon and was out of control.
When I tried to encourage dialogue, she would not listen to me, so I told him, "Anyone can make mistakes if you explain things like that all at once! I can't listen to the same explanation or warning dozens of times! If you make a mistake, you have to fix it the next time, that's how you learn!" I would never have thought that I would have said it so firmly. It was something I had been thinking about for a long time, so I was able to say it without hesitation.
But, of course, she continued to hurl as many abusive epithets as she wanted to during that time.
To begin with, she had run a nursing home, and she had once bragged about how none of her employees had been able to keep up with her and quit.
In retrospect, I wish I had realized sooner that she had no tolerance for mistakes.
She was cursing endlessly while I was hurriedly packing. It was chaos.
"Pay for the okonomiyaki, udon, lodging, utilities, and everything else I bought you and go home!”
She kept saying such stingy things along with bad words. She also called me a thief.
I had herpes around my mouth because of the stress. I'm going home and it's going to cost me 100$ to get there. If there is no train in the worst case, I have to take a taxi all the way back home, which costs 300$. At that time, it is 18:30 at night, there is no train nearby, and I don't know what buses are available since it is my first time in this place. I was in such a situation. I didn't ask them to buy me a drink, and they should have paid for my accommodation and utilities free of charge.
I thought, "Shouldn't you be the one who should pay for the transportation and the fee? I thought, "Shouldn't you be the one who should pay for the transportation and the fee?
I would like to add that she would call me in the middle of the night to check if other guests had left the lights on or had forgotten to turn off the water. She wakes me up even though I'm already asleep, and then for some reason I can't sleep.
I work too many overtime hours.
But even under such circumstances, I find myself thinking that her half-crazed appearance feels more natural and even more beautiful than the false kindness she has shown me so far.
For the first time in my life, I was moved by the moment when a person's true nature and natural state appear, and I even felt a certain artistry in it.
That's the end of my complaint.
I apologize to anyone who was offended by reading this.
I really wanted to vent.
Thank you for listening to me. I wish you all the best!
After that, I managed to call a cab, caught the train in time, and was able to return home with a 100$ course.
While I was returning, I blocked all contact information for the owners.
I also contacted the introducer.
What a liberating feeling..!
After returning home, I talked to various people and heard that this is a common occurrence among rural farmers in Japan.
I promised myself that I would not get involved with people who are peculiar and stingy, because it is too much of a quirk to lump them all together as rural farmers.
There are many strange people in the world.
Of course, I am probably a strange person from someone else's point of view, so I can't speak for others.
Anyway, it was a good life experience.
There are people with whom you can't have a good relationship, even if you try.
If you still have to deal with such people, don't keep it to yourself, but talk to someone who can help you.
It may seem obvious, but if you don't keep this in mind on a regular basis, you won't be able to do it when the time comes.
I also learned that this is a good time to explore various aspects of human relationships. I also feel that I have developed an eye for people.
In that sense, it is a valuable asset to have had this kind of experience here!
By the way, I am worried about the newcomer. They are replacing me.
I told the introducer all about it, and he said, "Don't worry!”
I was told that the newcomer is a very strong and dynamic person!
It seems that the introducer got information from other sources than me, and found out that the bamboo grove owner is a strange person. So they said they wanted to see the chemical reaction between two peculiar people. The newcomer is also aware of this situation.
I guess this introducer is acting completely out of curiosity! Isn't that the best! I thought.
I'll look forward to hearing from he afterwards!
Thank you all so much for reading to the end, even though it's a long story!
I am now safely home!
