The world of Splinterlands keeps on expanding, with more and more cards coming to the land of Praetoria, enriching the world and bringing more complexity to the game. As of the moment, Splinterlands has 6 core sets, with the two most recent sets being playable in Modern ranked, and with the next set Battle of Praetoria, coming in a few months, the game's meta will surely be shaken again.
But with a new set coming, I just thought to take a look at all the existing Splinterlands card sets to see how many cards were available in each set, and what I mean by that was the individual cards that can be played in each set, as well as what other stuff each set brings that makes them different from the other.
For its core set, the Alpha Set is what started Splinterlands in 2018. Its core set was made of 59 cards, with 20 common, 20 rare, 10 epic, and 9 legendary cards, 5 of which are rare archons for each element, while the Dragon Archon is Legendary. It has 4 dragon promo cards, one for each rarity, with the rare card being another Archon. As the first core set, Alpha cards give a 10% bonus when used in ranked battle.
| Alpha Set | Total | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Common Rare Epic Legendary | 20 20 10 9 | 59 |
| Promo | Common Rare Epic Legendary | 4 | 4 |
| 63 cards |
Beta, on the other hand, was basically a reprint of the Alpha Set, but with the addition of 10 Neutral cards, as well as 1 Epic and 1 Legendary Archon for each Element, except for Dragon, which increases its number to 79 cards. It also introduces 6 promo cards, including 3 additional Dragon Archons. It is also during this set that reward cards were first introduced, with 15 common, 18 rare, 8 epic, and 8 legendary cards that were given to players after playing a certain number of battles through the means of chests. Later on, an Essence Orb mini-set was also issued for sale, with 12 additional cards inside the pack. Playing the core Beta card gives an additional 5% bonus in ranked rewards.

| Reward | Common Rare Epic Legendary | 15 18 8 8 | 49 |
| 145 cards |
After Beta comes Untamed, which introduces 84 all-new cards, along with new abilities, as well as an additional airdrop-based reward system for players who bought packs and would stand to be the actual second major core set of the game. For its mini-set Azmare Dice, it consists of 25 cards in total, while the set has 3 promo cards and 36 reward cards. Untamed cards do not give an additional bonus in ranked battles.

The Chaos Legion card set was the Fourth major card expansion to be introduced into Splinterlands. Its core set alone already has 103 cards and has by far the most cards released among the major sets. But even its reward set has a large variety of cards, given that there are two different reward sets that were released in this set. The first batch of rewards works the same as the previous reward cards that precede it, but the second batch introduces soulbound reward cards that can only be unlocked for a limited time. The CL Soulbound reward set is also the only set that gives Archons as reward cards.
For its Promo card, Chaos Legion introduces the Runi card, which is the only "evergreen" card in the game, meaning it will always remain playable in modern, as well as the only Neutral Archon, Lux Vega. Chaos Legion also has the mini-set called Riftwatchers, which introduces 43 new cards to the game, including 5 airdrop cards, in addition to the limited-edition promo card, Oshuur Constantia

Rebellion is the 5th core set in the game and was the first set of cards that the SPS DAO contracted Splinterlands to make on their behalf, with a 50/50% profit-sharing split for the core set and the DAO receiving 100% of the profits for the promo cards sold. The set introduces a new game mechanic called "Summoner Tactics" where an archon can give either additional stats or abilities on a card of his choosing, as well as the introduction of Dual-element Archons, allowing them to summon units from two different abilities. But it was maybe because of this that Rebellion only has 94 cards for its core set. It was also the second major set that did not release a mini-set. Instead, there were a series of promo card sales that took place at different periods.
Similar to the second batch of Chaos Legion rewards, all Rebellion rewards were also soulbound and can only be unbound by paying DEC for a limited time.
During this set, a major change was made to the Airdrop system, where players now need to stake packs and cards to the mage Wagons for them to receive card airdrops.

| Core | Common Rare Epic Legendary | 29 28 14 23 | 94 |

| 155 cards |
And then, we have Conclave Arcana as the most recent major set in the game with a total of 91 cards. For this set, they introduce the Bloodline mechanic, where an Archon can summon a unit regardless of their element, as long as they share the same bloodline, while also gaining additional abilities. Also, premium Black Foils and Arcane Foils cards were introduced, where a Black Foil card gives a 20% reward bonus.
A major change was also introduced in the Conclave Arcana rewards, where the rewards remain soulbound unless they get unbound using "Unbinding Scrolls", that player can win through reward chests or craft using land resources. Later on, an Extra card set was added to the set, which includes land-crafted cards, non-soulbound, free cards, and anything that is neither a major, mini, reward, or promo card.
As for its Escalation mini-set, it brings another 49 cards to the game, 3 of which are airdrop archons that were not yet released to the game as of the writing of the post.

Meanwhile, the Foundation Set is the only set that can be played in the Frontier mode and is made of 55 cards, wherein you can get soulbound versions of it when you complete the Academy and earn foundation packs and cards by playing Frontier mode. An Extra set also followed after a while with the Arena Vanguard, which brings 7 new units and a Dragon Archon.

Finally, the Gladiator set is a batch of cards that were mostly played during brawls, but can be used in ranked battles through the use of Chaos Legion Summoners or when the Are you Entertained Yet ruleset was in play. The card's use was intentionally limited because it has the Bloodlust ability that will allow the card to increase its stats every time it defeats a card.

| 1,051 Cards |
Overall, the game has 1,051 cards that can be used in battle, given that some have a limited use case and not every card can be played in all game formats. Still, you can see in this number of cards how long Splinterlands has been around over the past eight years. And this will just grow over time. Even now, Conclave Arcana has not yet completed a set, since another batch of promo cards will be released every 90 days, as well as the possibility of new land-crafted cards, so before the new set was released, it might be able to surpass Chaos Legion in the number of cards it has.
