The power of foresight

Just as the hype around Cyclone Arnab began to settle and we started catching our breath, nature has decided to throw another curveball our way. True to the unpredictable patterns of our coastal climate, the meteorology department has already flagged yet another low-pressure system brewing in the Bay of Bengal, expected to cross over in few days. This relentless rainy season keeps us constantly on our toes, turning life into a balance between handling immediate disruptions and keeping an eye on what is coming next. It was right in the middle of this latest heavy downpour and raging winds that I had to completely rethink my daily routines, turning a simple indoor confinement into a lesson on adaptation and foresight.

With the heavy rain making outdoor exercise impossible, I found myself facing a familiar dilemma. I am not a commercial gym person, but daily movement is so deeply embedded into my lifestyle that missing it leaves me with actual physical body pain. Instead of giving up, I looked around to maximize what we have and decided our ground floor apartment corridor was my best bet.

It is a small, tight space, but having something is always better than nothing, and it served my purpose perfectly. Interestingly, my wife ended up joining me, though she initially hesitated because it felt like an inappropriate or odd place for a workout.

I managed to convince her that it is entirely a matter of mindset - if you are determined, you can make any space work because at the end of the day, it is the sweating that truly matters.

This mindset of working with the present while anticipating the future naturally spilled over to our three family bicycles parked outside.

Knowing that the incoming winds from this new system would easily knock them flat if left scattered, I decided to act early. I lined all three cycles tightly in a single row, packing them so close that if the winds pushed them, they would safely lean into one another as a single unit rather than crashing down hard. My daughter watched this and curiously asked why I was doing it, to which I replied that she would see the reason soon enough.

Once the heaviest wind forces passed, she saw exactly what had happened. The storm had blown hard, but our cycles stood their ground, leaning into each other with absolutely minimal damage - a simple, practical reminder of how a little bit of forward thinking can protect what we own from the unpredictable elements. At the end of the day, that is how the next generation learns from us; our Gen Z kids pick up practical foresight simply by watching how we handle life's daily storms...
