Greetings!
Power is not one thing that we can get on a platter of gold, at times, we fight for it before we can possess it. Another thing I want us to know is that power is always used by force and like the saying goes that, “ power corrupt and absolute power corrupt absolutely.” This is just the absolute truth about power, when power is being concentrated in the hands of a single person, then such a power would surely be controlling the person as the person would be power drunk.
Having talked so much about power and how it can corrupt us as humans if being concentrated in our hand or in the hand of an individual, I would like to delve into the topic of the prompt which is all about, “Veto power.”
As for me, a veto power is such a power that I would not want anyone including myself to possess and this is not just because of anything but because of the fact that power if given to an individual no matter how little such a power is can corrupt anyone given the power to most especially when the person has the capacity to direct the affairs of his or her fellow human beings.
What power does on most occasions is that it intoxicates the person who has the power in his or her hand and when power intoxicates, the person begins to misbehave. Not only that, some would even try to equate themselves to God Almighty the creator of the whole universe just because they were given power to direct the affairs of their followers.
We have seen it in our country where people, most especially our leaders who have power to rule over us, just believe that they can do and undo. They most times believe that they are demigods which they are not, in fact, there were times I was asking myself if these people always think that they would die someday, but I don't think they used to have the thought in their mind which I believe is bad for any human to do.
So, with these instances, power being concentrated in the hand of an individual all in the name of veto power is something that's bad and if permitted to continue as we have in some places or countries of the world, it would amount to truncating the essence of an egalitarian society and democracy which I believe would on a good day make everyone to be equal in our society.
However, I'm not saying that it would be a bad thing if as a society or nation we have our leader who will be directing us with Powers in their hands, but if that should now be the case, those powers which would have been concentrated in the hand of an individual or a few people should be well regulated and documented so that the few that has the power will not be abusing the majority without the veto power.
