Greetings!
Daniel was a good friend of mine when I was still looking for admission back in the days, we both met at a tutorial class where he known to be a brilliant boy by all of us at the tutorial, although, he was a science student while I was back then an art student, but the funny thing about this guy is that he knows everything about every departments.
Aside from this, his artistic prowess was second to none as he can do all sorts of painting. I could remember him making a sketch of me while I was called out in our art class for a debate. I was not aware that someone was making a sketch of me as I was only carried away by the point I was building to defeat my opponent.
It's after class that he came to me and asked,
"Sam, is this you?"
I was surprised to see the sketch of me as I was not that aware of him making a sketch of me. I screamed in a loud voice saying,
"Dan, this is me, who sketched this?"
When he heard me asking me this question, he burst into laughter and said,
"I'm the one who sketched you when you were trying to prove your point to everyone in the class at the debate session." "Wow! This is amazing," I said. " So, you don't know that I can sketch?" "Yeah, I don't know you are this good at sketching ooo," I replied. "I can, " he said.
"Who taught you this?" I asked. "No one, it's a gift from God," he replied. "So, you are good at everything," I said. "If you say so," he replied.
Sincerely speaking, I was happy to have seen me being sketched as he had done, and this really gave me a lift out of our defeat to our opponent. Although some said we were cheated in the competition, I didn't think so, as we didn't really perform up to what was expected of us.
So, Daniel being a multi talented guy made me developed this kind of a love for him and I made sure I was so close to him not for any other reason, but just to learn from him as I'm this kind of a person that loves to learn the good side of people as there's no way there would be a person without a flaw. Daniel also has his own flaws as he was this kind of a hit tempered being, but that was none of my own business.
So, just because of my thirst for knowledge, I moved close to him and we became the best of friends. There were some things I thought were so difficult before I met Daniel, but ever since we have been best of friends, we have been best of friends. Those things that had seemed difficult for me to do in those days have now been made too simple for me to behold and know.
Before I met him, I was not that good in calculation, but this guy Daniel made me love mathematics as he once told me saying,
"Sam, even if you are in art class, that doesn't stop you from knowing how to do calculations."
Although, I was not pleased with what he had told me as I have always thought of mathematics as a no go area for me and this was because I was not so good in it. Our mathematics teacher back then in the secondary school thought the first class was not that good in disseminating knowledge to us and his students and even with all our complaints nothing was done by the school management to arrest the situation as the man was too big for them to do away with by the school management.
So, this made the majority of us that were not that good in calculation to run to the art class we had thought we would be able to survive. Even though I have always had it in my mind to become a civil engineer as a person, I neglected that dream just because of my fear for mathematics.
However, when Daniel told me that there's nothing too hard to know about mathematics, I was at first not so sure of what he was saying, but when he started to be taking me on the subject, I fell in love with it and it's then that I realized that there's nothing too hard to do in mathematics.
Just because of this, I decided to go back to the drawing board and pursue my dream of becoming a civil engineer and I decided to register for another SSCE examination and I sat for the exam which I passed creditably well. Although Daniel had gained admission to study medicine and surgery a year before, but with my renewed interest in pursuing my dream, I didn't let that deter me from what I have always loved to become.
The following year after re-sitting for the said examination, I also gained admission into the University to study my dream civil engineering course and today I am a certified civil engineer and if not for God, I would have jettisoned my dream just because of mathematics. But thanks to the Almighty God who brought to my life Daniel, the brilliant boy.
