Everyone in the city knew Daniel Adebayo, at age forty-eight, Daniel was one of the wealthiest businessmen in the country. He owned luxury hotels, construction companies, shopping complexes, a whole conglomerate, several properties scattered across the city. His photograph frequently appeared in newspapers and business magazines, usually accompanied by words such as successful, visionary, and self-made.
He had built his empire from almost nothing, and he was proud of it. Daniel was also a married man, it completed his image. For twenty-two years, he had been married to Miriam, a woman he had met when they were both much younger. They had three children, a beautiful house and a life that looked perfect from the outside. Daniel often spoke publicly about family values and the importance of loyalty but as with many perfect images, they always have something hidden. It was a secret he had managed to keep hidden for years.
One Friday evening, after telling Miriam that he had an important business meeting, Daniel drove to one of his hotels. He checked into a room under a false name and spent the evening with Vanessa, an escort he had secretly hired as he had done so many times before. Daniel believed he had been careful, as this had become routine for him.
As he and Vanessa walked through the hotel lobby, a man sitting near the reception desk recognised him. His name was Samuel, Samuel had seen Daniel several times in the news and immediately realised who he was. He watched Daniel leave with Vanessa and quietly took a photograph of them together. Samuel didn't even know what he intended to do with the photograph but he just felt it was an opportunity to have something no one else did.
Then the opportunity came, the next morning, Daniel's phone vibrated, there was a message from an unknown number. “I know where you were last night”. Daniel frowned, then another message arrived. “I also know who you were with” .Then came the photograph. Daniel's heart dropped, for several seconds, he simply stared at the screen. A final message appeared, send ₦50 million, or your wife gets the photograph. Daniel immediately called the number.
“Who are you?”
“You already know who I am,” Samuel replied.
“What do you want?”
“You know exactly what I want.”
Daniel tried to threaten him. He told Samuel that he was making a serious mistake and that powerful people were not easily intimidated.
“You're not afraid of me,” Samuel said. “You're afraid of your wife.”
The call ended, Daniel spent the entire day thinking about what could happen if Miriam discovered the truth. He imagined the humiliation, the newspapers, the damage to his reputation and the effect it could have on his businesses.
Eventually, he paid Samuel the first time but as with most blackmailers Samuel did not disappear. A week later, another demand arrived. Daniel became increasingly paranoid, he stopped sleeping properly. He began checking his surroundings whenever he left his house. Every unknown number made him nervous, then Samuel demanded ₦100 million. That was when Daniel decided he had had enough. Instead of paying, he called his driver, Musa.
“I need you to arrange a meeting,” Daniel said.
“With who?”
“Someone who has been causing me problems.”
Daniel gave him Samuel's number and instructed him to arrange a meeting at an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.
“Don't tell anyone,” Daniel warned.
That evening, Samuel arrived at the warehouse expecting money. Instead, he found Daniel standing inside with Musa, Samuel immediately became suspicious.
“Where's the money?”
Daniel looked at him coldly.
“You've already taken enough.”
“You know what happens if you don't pay me.” Samuel said
Daniel took a step forward and said “You should have stopped when I paid you the first time.” What happened inside the warehouse lasted only a few minutes but when Daniel and Musa eventually left, Samuel was dead. They believed the darkness had hidden everything, unbeknownst to them, they were dead wrong.
About a hundred metres away stood a small mechanic's workshop. An apprentice named Ibrahim had been working late that night. He was seventeen and had been asked by his employer to finish cleaning the workshop before going home. When he heard the sound of a vehicle stopping outside, he looked through the window.
He saw Daniel and Musa enter the warehouse with Samuel, something about the situation made Ibrahim uneasy. He remained by the window and minutes later, Daniel and Musa came out. They looked around before getting into the vehicle and driving away.
Ibrahim's heart began beating faster, he had seen enough to know that something was wrong. He wanted to call the police immediately, but fear stopped him. Daniel Adebayo was not an ordinary man. Ibrahim had heard stories about wealthy people using their influence to escape trouble. He imagined Daniel discovering that he had been watching them.
The next morning, he told himself to forget what he had seen but he couldn't. Every time he closed his eyes, he remembered Samuel entering the warehouse and Daniel leaving afterward. By afternoon, Ibrahim made his decision, he went to the nearest police station.
“I saw something last night,” he told the officer behind the desk.
The officer looked at him.
“What did you see?”
Ibrahim told him everything.
At first, the police were cautious. They asked him the same questions repeatedly, checking whether his story remained consistent, it did. Ibrahim gave them the location of the warehouse, the description of the vehicle and the names of the people he recognised, then the police began investigating.
They obtained security footage from a nearby business. The footage showed Daniel's vehicle arriving at the warehouse that night. Further investigation uncovered financial records connecting Daniel to Samuel and communications between Samuel and Daniel. Soon, the police had enough evidence to act. Daniel was arrested at his office and Musa was arrested shortly afterward.
The news shocked the city, the man who had spent decades building an image of respectability was now facing criminal charges. Miriam eventually learned everything, the hotel, Vanessa, the blackmail and Samuel's death. The life Daniel had worked so hard to protect collapsed within days.
