Greetings!
Nepotism is one thing that has eaten deep into our system in this part of the world. People now favour their own and neglect others. Although, it pays those that are being favoured but to those that are not favoured, it is all about pain as they would always be denied the opportunity that comes their way even if they are competent enough for the opportunity.
Having said so much about nepotism and its effects, I would like to delve into the topic of the prompt before me which is all about, “nepotism.”
One thing that has eaten so deep into our system in this country of ours is nepotism where people in authority or let me say people in charge favour their friends or relatives over others that merit the opportunities that are being provided for by the government or private organisations.
One sad thing about this kind of system is that, those who merited this kind of opportunities would not be considered for appointments, however, those who did not merit the opportunities are the one that would secure the opportunities and this is why there is nothing to show as development in the land.
People get job appointments just because of their connection with directors, politicians or permanent secretaries in my country. Although it pays those that get the job as it would help to reduce the rate of unemployment in the society. However, if merit is nothing to write home about when it comes to employment opportunities in the land then the effect would surely show up in the economic growth of the country and this is because, instead of putting a round peg in the round hole, it's a square peg that would eventually be put in round hole.
To me, this act of nepotism should be criminalized and this is because of its negative effect on the economy and even the lives of people who merited the opportunities that were denied them. I have overtime seen people committing murder just because of them being denied their merited opportunities.
This has happened to me before. Some time ago, there was this announcement that there would be a recruitment in the immigration of my country and we all applied for this job opportunity and when the time came for the screening exercise, my name was substituted with that of another person. Less I forget, I have sat for the exam and I passed creditably well, but when the screening was fully come, my name was substituted with that of another person who was connected to those that mattered in the society.
Ever since then, I have stopped applying for any opportunities that were announced online and this is because, even if I apply without the necessary connection, then it would be an effort in futility. Just recently my wife asked me to apply for a recent opportunity that was just announced to the general public, but I told her that I'm not applying and this is because of the nepotism in our public system.
In conclusion, nepotism should be rejected in our public and if possible should be criminalized for the betterment of the society and our economic system.
