Failing at an attempt does not conclude you as a failure but when you have accepted the fate that you failed, then the real failure sets in. There are many people that are seen as successful in various fields of human endeavour but they did not succeed straight at the initial. Some of them had very rough and undulating pathways but they never threw in the towel.

If you believe that you are a failure from a single attempt, then you are a failure, but if you refuse to allow that single attempt to define you, then success will still beckon. You may not have a choice over that attempt but you have a choice of what your reaction to that attempt will be. A friend of mine once said that "failure is a conscious choice", and this falls in line with the words of Confucius the great:

Our glory (talking about the ancient China) does not lie in not falling but in rising up each time.

What you do after you have fallen at an attempt is more important than the attempt itself. The same way success is not regarded as a destination or attainment but a progression to be better, failure is not final but a slight steps-back that, if converted well, will set the pace for a very great comeback. The only determinant is your response. This is why reactions are as important as actions themselves.

If you have ever seen where high or long jumpers perform, you will discover something similar to them - they normally take a few little steps backwards before they come running to the bar. These steps are not setbacks but steps-back. This is exactly the way you should see failure. A single attempt should not be what will define your future attempts. Remember, you believed that you were able to hit the mark, and that was why you made the attempt in the first place, so do not let your first attempt to bring discouragement to you.

Each time you feel like giving up, just remind yourself that you are not the only one that has failed, so why should you be the one to quit? If you follow the stories of successful people, you will discover that some of them failed more than once in their journey but they were able to pick themselves up again. Note this: the secret behind the success and achievements of people can be gotten from their stories.

Always have this at the back of your mind: success (or lack of it) is always not a function of your first attempt. You can fail at the first attempt and still end up successful while someone can have a good start and still miss it along the way. You see, other steps and trials matter too.
