There are many people whose major problem is not how to make money but how to spend it. The truth is that no matter how much you make and no matter your earnings, if you cannot plan your budget and execute it well, then you will run into financial challenges. You will be surprised that the people you think are earning more than you may not be earning as much as you think but they only found a way to manage their spendings. Here, we shall take a look at how to effectively plan one's budget in order not to run into financial challenge.

While growing up, there was a rule that was taught by one of my mentors and this will form the basis of what we will discuss about budgeting today. He called the rule "50-30-20 rule." The first figure represents your needs, the second figure represents your wants, and the final figure represents your savings. This means that for every income you have, you have to make a budget for your needs, wants, and savings. When budgeting, you need to favour your needs first and it should not be more than half of your total income, so that you will not sacrifice other aspects of your spendings.
It is only when you have planned for your needs that your wants will come into place. However, you also need to be careful with it, so that you will not dip hands into the part you need to save for future. Yes, there may be financial challenge that may come to you unannounced that only your past savings can save you even before any other help comes through. This reminds me of what my friend used to say in relation ro savings; "it is your savings of today that will save you tomorrow." You may not know when financial challenge will come or how it will come, but you can prepare for it by saving. Now let us consider some points.
1. Stick to the budget
It is one thing to make a budget, but it takes a higher level of maturity to keep to it. Many people make budget but what matters is that it is followed judiciously. It is not the budget you make that benefits you but the one you keep. If you make budget and end up not keeping it, you are not different from the person that does not have any budget at all. More so, when spending, you should favour the needs at hand more than your wants. Following your budget makes you to avoid impromptu buying which can affect you financially. What you do not need now, there is no point trying to go for it when you have obvious needs that have not been met. Be wise.
2. Make budget with what is at hand
When making budget, you do not have to put in imaginary figures because it will end up putting you under pressure. Your budget should be based on what you have at hand, not what you are believing to have which you are not even sure of. For salary earners, your budget should be with your present salary, not the future salary or allowance that you are not sure of. It is better to plan with what you have and then have extra funds left than to plan with what you hope for and not meeting up with it. When budgeting, you need to employ your wisdom to know what to favour over the other, and to place your needs and wants accordingly.

3. Do not borrow to meet your budget
It is not saying that borrowing is bad, but you should know what to borrow for. At least, someone can borrow to invest, which will yield profits. But borrowing for consumption or to meet your budget should be avoided. Instead of borrowing to meet your budget, why not cut your budget to fall in line with your financial strength? If what you want to borrow for is not necessary, then you do not need to borrow in the first place. Also, try to pay up your debt so that it will not weaken your budget.
4. Invest and get other sources of income
You will agree with me that the cost of living is rising per day, so if you notice that your income has become deficit for your budget, then you need to upgrade your sources of income. There is a way you will cut down on your budget in the bid to manage your available resources and it will become counterproductive. The only solution in this particular scenario is to invest into what will give you a secondary source of income. Good a thing, the Internet has provided us with a lot of opportunities to get a secondary income, you only need to take advantage of any of them.
