Sharing your light with people or allowing them to see their path with your light does not reduce the intensity of your light. When you allow others to light their own candle from your own, there will be more light available and darkness will be driven off even further. In the same way, doing good to people or helping people to go up does not make you to go down. This is why you should always feel the need to help people.

I remember a particular real life story I once heard about a young boy who went to fetch drinking water from the only available borehole in the community. The borehole is free though but the queue that is normally on the borehole is discouraging. Well, he needed the water, so he joined the queue. After about 30 minutes on the queue, it was almost about to get to his turn to fetch water, then an elderly woman came to fetch water.
The people on the queue insisted that the woman should join the queue and wait for her turn. Well, she had to join the queue. However, the young boy thought to himself, "how will this woman wait this long to fetch water?". The young boy went to the back of the queue, took the woman's container, brought it to the front and replaced his own to the woman's position on the queue.
This gesture surprised the woman and left her speechless. When the woman was done fetching the water, he offered to help her take back her water to her house, at least by the time he will be back, it must have gotten to his turn again. While they were on the way trekking home, they started discussing about random things and the woman asked him what he was currently doing. He explained that he finished from secondary school but he wants to get into the Nigerian Defence Academy but does not have anyone to give him recommendation.
At that point, the woman calmly told him that his son will be coming back in a few days and that he is a senior officer at NDA. To cut the story short, the woman's son came back and she introduced him to the boy and that was how he helped him get into the NDA. Today, that same young boy of that time has risen to become a Colonel. You see, this all happened because of the little act of kindness he showed to someone in need.

If you know what you stand to gain by being good and kind to people, you will not need to be motivated to be good. Most times, it does not even cost much to express goodness towards others. Once your heart is set aright, goodness will flow naturally. Note this: the good you do to someone today is like the act of planting seeds; harvests will follow later.
