One of the major challenges of new businesses is the one related to finances. Without doubt, the effective starting up and running of a business will require finances. It is not surprising that many start-ups drop along the way, not because of lack of relevant ideas to push the business forward but because of financial constraints. This is why the issues of finances, when it comes to a business, should be taken seriously. Here, we will be looking at a few common ways in which an entrepreneur can finances their business and keep it running.

1. Personal funds

There is a school of thought that assumes that "the greatest form of help that can be readily accessible and available to anyone is the help they render to themselves." In financing your business, your personal savings (which can also be called "entrepreneur's fund") can come in handy to save your business before other help comes through for you. I normally advice people that, when they want to start a business, they should have already saved up some funds to start with. Obviously, they will need to put something on ground first, and then get going before other financial assistance may come in.

Personal fund is the one that carries the least liability and least risk because, I mean, it does not come with interest. Imagine if you borrowed money from someone at a fixed interest rate and the returns become delayed longer than expected, then you would have incurred some extra charges for defaulting on the payment, but personal fund does not have this kind of risk. Personal funds can also include acquired and inherited funds and assets.

2. Assistance from friends and family

This is another way by which an entrepreneur can raise funds for their business. This is fairly common and it can also be readily available depending on the relationship of the entrepreneur with their family members and friends. Obviously, you have to build an acquaintance and relationship with someone first before you expect financial support from them. So the first thing to do is to earn their trust first, then you will not have much difficulty in securing financial aid from them.

One way to earn financial trust is by being financially honest and having financial integrity and discipline. Imagine if you gave someone funds for something in the past and they blew it up on irrelevant things, will you still have the oomph to help him financially again when he comes back in the future? This is how it works; to gain financial aid easily from friends and family, you have to prove to them that you are worth the financial aid.

3. Forming partnerships

This is another way of raising funds for your business. In this category, instead of looking for people to gift you the required funds, you can just get people to invest or partner with you. That is, they will provide percentage of the financial requirements and also get percentage of the profits.

In partnership, the proprietor of the business and the investors have a shared involvement of the business. That is, they share the risks, profit and sometimes, losses too. Partnership can come in variety of ways; like public partnership - where the partnership is opened to the general public to participate in it. Then there is the private partnership where the business owner chooses who to partner with.

4. Getting a loan

In the event that other sources of financing become unforthcoming, then the entrepreneur can resort to getting a loan. The nature and terms of the loan can differ with the amount involved. More so, the loan facilities can differ too. For example, there are some SME (Small and medium-sized enterprises) and Microfinance banks that offer very minimal interest on loans, but is generally intended for small loans.

Apart from financial institutions like banks, there are other loaning platforms that one can take advantage of to secure funds for their business. For example; Money Lenders can come in handy here. So as an entrepreneur, you have the responsibility to explore the options that best suit you which will also be readily available at your disposal.
