A Touch Of Excellence

Whatever you want to do, you have to have "excellence" at the back your mind. What you know you will not be able to do well to the best of your ability, then it is pointless doing it in the first place. In business for example, a lot of others are also doing what you are doing and offering similar services as you. The only way you can make your business to stand out and be preferred is by offering what many others do not - that is excellence. You will be surprised that people will leave others just to patronise you because of the quality of your services.

There was a time I wanted to make some jackets for our choral group and because of the number of jackets we were to make and the limited time we had, we needed about two tailors to get the job done. There were about 10 jackets to be made, so we gave two tailors 5 each. By the time the tailors brought back the jacket, one tailor did an excellent job and even weaved the edges even though it was not part of the deal. We were so impressed with him. While the other tailor just did a quick "anyhow" job.

By the next month, many other choral groups enquired from us where to make their jackets. Of course we recommend the tailor that had done an excellent job. The point is, the work he did was what created the room for more works for him. Even though his charges were a little higher, still he was preferred because of his excellent and exceptional services. You cannot do thing the way you like in an "anyhow" fashion and expect to achieve success. It is true that perfection may not yet be obtained but you have to put conscious efforts to keep getting better with each attempt.

If what you are doing now is exactly the same way you had been doing it in the past without any additional upgrade, then you are not fulfilling the demands of excellence. You have to learn to update and increase of your skills, knowledge-base, and capacity. The world is already changing rapidly and many things that are seen as excellent in the years past, may not even be up to par in this era. This is why excellence should be a continuous approach to get better with time and to become an improved version of yourself. Your life, business, and other aspects should radiate uniqueness to make you to stand out.

You may not necessarily need to do a different thing to be different from others. Even the common things that you do, you can do it in a uniquely uncommon way to become outstanding in life. If you do what everyone does in the same way as they do it, then how are you different from everyone else? In this part of the world, there is a particular drink we call "Kunu Aya" (a kind of Tiger nut drink). People who sale it just prepare it and put in any bottle and hawk it for people to buy.

That has been how we have known Kunu Aya to be sold. However, something drew my attention when I entered a particular office. One woman drove in with coolers of drinks to sell and I was curious to know what kind of drinks they were. When she opened the coolers, they were the same Kunu Aya but with an entirely different packaging. She put it in a corked bottle and put her sticker on the bottle; it was really adorable. Before 30 minutes, the entire drinks were sold out. I was made to understand that she goes to offices each day to supply the drink, so she had to make it attractive and well-packaged. You see, she added a touch of excellence by doing a common thing in a uniquely uncommon way.

When you are focused on going for excellence in all that you do, you will put in your best and make your actions to count. When you discover that your actions are not yielding the required results that you desire, then what you need to do is to step up your actions. Where others stopped should not be your stopping point. If you must achieve excellence, then be ready to go beyond the ordinary to do extraordinary things.
