Maccaws are a group of highly coloured parrots from tropical North and South America. Some are critically endangered. The male and female are both coloured the same which is extremely uncommon amongst colourful birds.
They nest in tree hollows. They have been known to live up to 65 years in captivity.
They can be seen flying in large family groups of over a dozen birds or more. The feed on wild nuts, fruits , flowers and leaves.
Their vibrant colour is a feast for the eyes and although their song is somewhat abrasive, it does alert you to the fact that they are flying by... so I can grab the camera and hope they land in a tree somewhere close by for a photo shoot.
They just can鈥檛 help but brighten the day!
