Getting back on the Wednesday walk train, I stopped by a local golf course to visit what is known as the Castle Mound. The Castle Mound is an odd geographical feature that dots this area. The area is known as the Driftless Area; the history of the Driftless is that the glaciers avoided this part of Wisconsin during the last Ice Age. As glaciers missed this area, certain perhistoric geographical features were left unblemished.
When the glaciers melted some thousands of years ago, the runoff came through the area and carved out the rivers and bluffs, the coulees and prairies. It also brought with it sediment from the mountains they destroyed that existed in the North, long, long ago. If you visit this area and drive around the Driftless, you'll see pockets of large rocks deposited in random places in the countryside. Flat farms fields exist with pockets of large boulders in the middle of nowhere.
The cave above used to be much larger and wound itself into the mound. Rumor had it years ago that the cave held buried treasure within it. Of course, no one seems to know where the buried treasure came from or where it went to. The cave itself wraps around in the mound, but alas, I did not venture into today thanks to inappropriate clothing.
Despite the lack of having a proper Wednesday caving experience, the day was beautiful, warm, and a cloudy blue. A perfect day for a mid morning hike.
The hike also helped me get to my 10k goal for Actifit...so yeah, thanks Castle Mound!
