Hi everyone! From the gramophone or "call songs" to cassettes, CDs, and later MP3s—the medium of listening to music has changed over time. However, the time we are currently going through is not just a change in medium; rather, it is a deep crisis for the entire audio industry system.
With the opportunity to listen to music for free on YouTube and various social media platforms, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), the traditional audio album market is almost on the verge of extinction.

Availability of free music: People are now more accustomed to listening to music for free than buying it.
Reluctance of artists: Artists are losing interest in releasing audio songs due to the lack of income from selling albums.
The rise of AI: AI is creating perfect melodies, voices and even videos in an instant, which is challenging the very existence of artists.

The cassette or CD sales market of the old days may never return to its previous form. However, the audio industry market will not be completely destroyed, but rather is being reorganized in a new way. Some realistic ways to overcome this crisis are discussed below:

  • Change in income model (Live Experience): Audio files are no longer the main product for sale, but rather a means of identity for the artist. The main income has now shifted to live concerts, stage shows and merchandise sales. Although songs are free on digital platforms, no technology can provide the real feeling of a live performance.
  • Streaming and royalty system: It is possible to ensure fair royalties for artists through subscription models on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music. This type of royalty collection society should be strongly developed in Bangladesh as well.
  • The uniqueness of human feelings: AI may be able to quickly create melodies or songs, but it is not possible for AI to express human life, suffering, love and spiritual feelings in a pure way. Fed up with the crowd of artificiality, listeners will eventually return to the original and original melodies created by humans.
  • The market for vinyl and nostalgia: A new culture of collecting "vinyl records" is now emerging around the world instead of cassettes. Music lovers are buying and collecting albums of their favorite artists as physical souvenirs.
  • Direct-to-fan medium: Using platforms like Patreon or Bandcamp, artists can earn good money by creating exclusive audio content directly for their blind fans (Superfans).

Finally, it is not possible to stop the evolution of technology, but it is wise to adapt to it. The old commercial structure of audio songs may have collapsed, but music is alive and well. Only by treating AI as a tool rather than an adversary and creating new alternative avenues of income can the music market once again shine with new possibilities.
