Murals on Aristiguieta Avenue (Eng/Esp)

Walking along the banks of the Manzanares River, from the Gomez Rubio Bridge toward the Guzman Blanco Bridge, I noticed the wonderful view of Callejon Santa Ines, a scene that has been immortalized in numerous paintings. The sight of the Basilica of Santa Ines in the background has become an iconic landmark of Cumana, and on this occasion, it was all right before my eyes. I didn’t hesitate to take photos to share, as it has such a powerful visual impact.

The entrance to the alley from Aristiguieta Avenue also marks the start of the tour of what has been called the Ciudad Mural project, where we are greeted by a portrait of a young Maria Rodriguez, a work by Argenis Aranguren, who incorporated elements such as the cayenne flower, a treble clef, and a butterfly into his composition, framed in a colorful palette that blends perfectly with the rest of the elements visible in the alley.

An image of Luis Mariano Rivera also stands out in this section; the famous artist from Sucre, born in Carupano, was also honored in this mural gallery. Immediately next, you’ll notice another large painting featuring a verse that’s very popular in the city, taken from the song “Rio Manzanares”; here, the Santa Ines Church and the trinitarian flowers reinforce the references.

I’ve passed by here many times, and somewhat unconsciously—because I was thinking about everyday matters—I hadn’t stopped to admire the art from this part of the street. The alley named in honor of The Purpurina also has its charm from this vantage point; for years, this space was a garbage dump, and therefore impassable.

Further along, upon reaching Calle Comercio and the iconic Tamarindo, you’ll see a somewhat faded mural that also features references such as Maria Rodriguez and the façade of the Basilica of Santa Ines, as well as a seascape. The contrast with the more recent murals invites us to reflect, since time, environmental conditions, and the lifespan of the paintings all affect the beauty and joy conveyed by the colors as they fade. Thus, the old mural serves as a warning of what the fate of the City of Murals will be if there is no plan for preservation and renovation.

Caminando por las riberas del río Manzanares, desde el puente Gómez Rubio hacia el puente Guzmán Blanco, me percato de la maravillosa vista del Callejón Santa Inés, perspectiva que ha sido inmortalizada en numerosas pinturas. La visión de la Basílica de Santa Inés en la profundidad de la escena se ha instaurado como un referente de Cumaná y en esta ocasión estaba todo ante mis ojos. No dudé en captar imágenes para compartirlas ya que posee un gran impacto visual.

También la entrada al callejón, desde la avenida Aristiguieta permite iniciar el recorrido de lo que se ha denominado proyecto Ciudad Mural, allí nos recibe un retrato de una joven María Rodríguez, obra realizada por Argenis Aranguren, quien incorporó a su composición elementos como la flor de cayena, una clave de sol y una mariposa, enmarcados en una gama colorida que combina a la perfección con el resto de elementos que se aprecian en el callejón.

Una imagen de Luis Mariano Rivera también destaca en esta entrada, el celebre artista sucrense, nacido en Carúpano, también fue homenajeado en esta galería de murales. De inmediato se observa otra gran pintura, la cual presenta un verso muy popular en la ciudad, extraído de la canción Río Manzanares, acá la iglesia Santa Inés y las flores trinitarias intensifican las referencias.

He pasado muchas veces por acá y de manera un tanto inconsciente, por estar pensando en asuntos cotidianos, no me había detenido a contemplar el arte desde esta parte de la calle. El Callejón en honor a La Purpurina también tiene su encanto desde esta ubicación, durante años este espacio fue un basurero y, por lo tanto, no había paso.

Más adelante, y llegando a la Calle Comercio y al icónico Tamarindo, se aprecia un mural un tanto descolorido que también exhibe referencias como María Rodríguez y la fachada de la Basílica de Santa Inés, además de un paisaje marino. El contraste con los murales más recientes nos invitan a reflexionar ya que el tiempo, las condiciones del ambiente y la vida útil de las pinturas influyen en que la belleza y alegría que transmiten los colores cuando se van apagando, así que el antiguo mural nos avisa cuál será el destino de la Ciudad Mural si no existe un plan de preservación y renovación.
