English version

After leaving the dungeon area, we made our way to the highest point of San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle. From there, one can see the watchtowers, each facing a different part of the city, which provided peripheral control over the surrounding area. The mountains appear closer than they actually are, thanks to the perspective from this vantage point.

This area houses the largest number of cannons; naturally, they are all rusty – the passage of time and saltpetre have left them in this condition – but the iron used in their construction is such an extraordinary material that these old cannons are still standing. This spot is the most popular with tourists, who often use it as a backdrop for taking selfies, photographs and videos which are later posted on social media.

It is worth noting that an earthquake in 1853 led to alterations being made to the upper structure; for this reason, it now appears as a large terrace with a single entrance, designed to make it difficult to reach the area housing the gunners and the powder magazine – the most important elements of a military fortress of that era.

Indeed, this enclosure, which housed gunpowder and ammunition, still retains its entrance, which is reached via a staircase situated in one corner. However, the entrance is sealed off, as are other areas of the castle. It is a pity that so many parts have been closed off; nevertheless, it is understood that the refurbishment was carried out to make it a safer place for visitors and staff working there. In fact, there is a foundation named the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia Foundation, which is responsible for safeguarding this colonial gem.
