A Walk Down Urdaneta Street (Eng/Esp)

It had been a while since I’d walked down Urdaneta Street in Cumaná, named in honor of Rafael Urdaneta, a prominent Venezuelan military figure who fought in the War of Independence. This area looks great; it’s pleasant to walk here, with colorful gardens and murals featuring very interesting artistic designs.

Wherever you look, there are flowers, plants, and shrubs of different colors and shapes, both on the sidewalks and in the gardens of the homes along the street. As I was glancing from one side to the other, my attention was drawn to the figure of a dolphin next to a tree—a creation made from small pieces of ceramic—an ingenious way to mark a large estate in the area.

This walk also gave me a chance to get some exercise and clear my head; it’s important to get a little exercise—in this case, walking long distances—to stay active. Circumstances sometimes turn into races against the relentless clock. I remember that the last time I passed through here, I visited several hardware stores looking for some building materials and found them at a popular paint store located on a neighboring street.

It was precisely that business that sponsored the design of a very eye-catching mural located at the Libertador Institute, created by the renowned Cumaná artist Sebastián Fernández Villar. It’s titled Cromograde, and its representative colors are pink, red, and orange. Using a technique called chromatic induction, he managed to break down and blend hues, creating an intriguing visual spectacle. I’ve always liked this artistic trend, ever since I discovered it through the works of Carlos Cruz Diez and Jesús Soto.

Tenía cierto tiempo que no transitaba por la calle Urdaneta de Cumaná, nombrada en honor a Rafael Urdaneta, destacado militar venezolano que participó en la Guerra de Independencia. Este sector luce muy bien, caminar por acá es agradable, se aprecian vistosos jardines y murales con propuestas artísticas muy interesantes.

Por donde se mire aparecen flores, plantas y arbustos de diferentes colores y formas tanto en las aceras como en los jardines de las residencias que se pueden apreciar. Justamente pasando la mirada de un lado a otro me llamó la atención la figura de un delfín junto un árbol, creación realizada a partir de pequeños trozos de cerámica, una ingeniosa manera de identificar una gran quinta de la zona.

Este recorrido también me sirvió para caminar un rato y despejar la mente, se hace necesario hacer un poco de ejercicio, en este caso caminar largas distancias, para mantenerse activo. Las circunstancias a veces se convierten en desafíos contra el tiempo que no perdona. Recuerdo que la última vez ue pasé por acá visité varias ferreterías buscando unos materiales de construcción y los encontré en una popular fábrica de pinturas ubicada en una calle contigua.

Justamente ese negocio fue el que patrocinó el diseño de un mural muy llamativo que se encuentra ubicado en el instituto Libertador y cuyo autor es el reconocido artista cumanés Sebastián Fernández Villar. Tiene por título Cromograde y los colores representativos son el rosa, el rojo y el naranja. A través de una técnica denominada induccion cromática logró descomponer y fusionar tonalidades originando un espectáculo visual interesante. Siempre me ha gustado esta tendencia artística, desde que la descubrí a través de las obras de Carlos Cruz Diez y Jesús Soto.
