As was mentioned last week, today we speak in simple and easily understandable words of Natural Running, with specific reference to the principles and ideas that are at the base of the philosophy and the studies defined with the name of Barefoot.
To help you better understand these concepts, let's try to imagine running barefoot on a hard and smooth surface, like a marble floor.
According to your personal opinion, what will be the part of the foot that will touch first on the ground?
The correct answer is a flat support, using the entire surface of the foot, or a support even moved and loaded on the forefoot, exactly as they are made and built shoes inspired by these principles, such as Newton, Merrell, Other, Topo Athletic, Hoka and others.
For a long time traditional companies have built and built many models with settings that are exactly contrary to the principles of natural running, producing shoes with great shock absorption powers located in the heel and with a drop (height difference between the heel and the forefoot) often more than one centimeter, favoring an unnatural support on the heel.
Running with a shoe with a drop equal to or greater than one centimeter results in the long term the consequence of a shortening of the Achilles tendon, the main engine of our race, penalizing our racing biomechanics.
This statement does not necessarily mean that you should immediately switch to using shoes inspired by the Barefoot concepts, but you simply want to submit to your attention this series of assessments, to provide you with concrete elements and considerations to be used in choosing your next running shoes.
Each of us has its own anatomical characteristic that can be very different from that of other people, and not always what is good for a runner must necessarily be correct and right for another runner.
Changing the type of shoe used, for example, by using a shoe built according to traditional canons to a shoe specifically inspired by the Barefoot philosophy can lead to a series of adaptation processes that can lead to the onset of real inflammation, located above all in the lower part of the leg, caused by the substantial modification of the support on the ground.
In theory, Barefoot shoes are anatomically more compatible with our human anatomy, but they will not always be the best choice, because after years and years of using traditional shoes the transition to these innovative shoes is not always simple and free of negative consequences. .
In the next article we will talk about what can be the remedies and the tricks to facilitate as much as possible the runners who want to switch from the use of a traditional shoe to that of a Barefoot shoe, thanks for your attention, dear Steemians Runners.
