Reflection... What does it mean? Have you ever stared back at the mirror and seen who stared back at you? Is it a happy face? A sad one? Or the one that leaves you in between?

Growing up, I had always envisaged how I'd want my life to be. I would think of the stage I should be when I reach a certain age. When I was in secondary school, My friends and I would share our goals. We were very serious with our studies, I was more serious because I knew that with my background, I couldn't afford a second time should I fail.

After school, we lost touch because none of us has a phone at the time we finished school. After some years, we connected on social media. I saw and learned that some of us especially those with a good support system (i.e. those that have wealthy parents) were able to go further with our education, they had good jobs and lived comfortably.

We created a group with just us friends from secondary school where we catch up and after they learned I couldn't afford to further my education and my job as a teacher earned me a meager salary, I perceived a change in the way they relate with me. Sometimes I wonder what they must be saying behind my back. I felt intimidated and Inadequate. It got to a stage where I felt withdrawn, I wondered if I should have told lies and claimed to be what I was not.

As time went by, I realized that everyone has their own time. I'm not where I want to be but I'm not where I used to be. I figured instead of wallowing in self-pity, I'd rather keep striving hard till I attain my goal. It might take longer than I had expected, but it's better late than never.

Mirror on the wall
Here we are again
Through my rise and fall
You've been my only friend...

This is a part of the lyrics to the song of a popular musician and I relate this song to some aspects of my life. Whenever I stand in front of a mirror, I love who I see looking at me in the mirror. When I smile, she smiles back. She has been my only friend through thick and thin. I always look at her with a smile on my face knowing that no matter the challenges we face, she always got my back.

Thank you all for reading.
