Hello everyone, good morning! I hope you all had a happy new year, and I wish peace and prosperity to all the wonderful people in the Amazing Nature community. I've been absent because one of my kittens is unwell, but I'm slowly getting back to my nature writing, and I wanted to start with two somewhat exotic plants. One isn't common where I live, and the other is only found in specific locations. These are plants I found within the city, and not exactly in people's gardens. One is very common in the savanna, in the moriche palm groves, river headwaters, lagoons, or any humid or marshy area of the Llanos region. The other, I've only seen in one place in the city, in front of a hotel, but nowhere in the savanna. Perhaps it can be found in some river areas, but I don't recall ever seeing it anywhere else.

The first plant is the Pontederia crassipes, or Water Hyacinth, and the second is the Pandanus tectorius, or Hala Tree.

Let's begin by talking about Pontederia crassipes, formerly known as Eichhornia crassipes, and commonly known as the water hyacinth. This aquatic plant is native to South America but has naturalized in many parts of the world, even becoming an invasive species in the areas it occupies. It is also known as the "terror of Bengal" precisely because of its invasive growth.

The water hyacinth is a perennial aquatic plant characterized by its free-floating nature. Its leaves are broad, thick, and oval. It can rise above the water's surface to a height of up to one meter. This plant provides camouflage, as it can be mistaken for the Amazonian frog; however, many insect species live on it. It is a fast-growing species and reproduces primarily through stolons. Each plant can produce thousands of seeds annually. Its habitat ranges from tropical deserts to subtropical and warm deserts, as well as tropical rainforests. One report states that it contains hydrogen cyanide, alkaloids, and triterpenoids, which can cause itching upon contact.

Water hyacinths grow and reproduce very rapidly, allowing them to cover large areas of stagnant water and lakes. They can easily coexist with other invasive and native plants in an area. Bodies of water already affected by human activities, such as artificial reservoirs, stagnant water, or eutrophic lakes that receive large amounts of nutrients, are more vulnerable to the presence of this plant. As water hyacinths multiply, forming mats, they can be harmful to many fish species and even obstruct waterways, hindering navigation and shipping. This tree can grow up to 9 meters tall and is anchored by roots that firmly fix it to the ground. Its leaves measure between 9-15 cm and 5-7 cm wide, with serrated edges. The trunk is smooth and branches at mid-height. The male flowers differ from the female flowers; the latter are small, very fragrant, and form clusters or racemes that last only a day. **ESPAÑOL** --- # Hola a todos, muy buenos días. Espero que hayan recibido un feliz año, deseando mucha paz y prosperidad para toda la gente bella de la comunidad Amazing Nature. Yo estuve ausente porque un gatito de mi manada está delicado de salud, pero ya poco a poco voy retomando mis escritos acerca de la naturaleza, y quise comenzar con dos plantas un poco exóticas; una de ellas no es común donde habito, y la otra sólo en sitios específicos. Éstas son plantas que encontré dentro de la ciudad, y no precisamente en los jardines de algunas casas; una de ellas es muy común pero en la sabana, en las zonas de morichales, cabeceras de ríos, lagunas, o cualquier zona húmeda o pantanosa de la región llanera, la otra, sólo la he visto en un sitio en la ciudad, frente a un hotel, pero en ninguna parte de la sabana. Tal vez se encuentre en alguna zona de ríos, pero no recuerdo haberla visto más que en este sitio.

La primera planta se trata de la Pontedería Crassipes o Jacinto de Agua, y la segunda es la Pandanus tectorius o árbol de hala.

Comencemos hablando de la Pontederia crassipes denominada anteriormente como Eichhornia crassipes, y comúnmente conocida como Jacinto de agua Ésta es una planta acuática originaria de Sudamérica pero ya se ha naturalizado en muchas partes del mundo convirtiéndose incluso en una planta invasora en las áreas que ocupa. También se le conoce como el "terror de Bengala" precisamente por su crecimiento invasivo.

El jacinto de agua es una planta acuática perenne que se caracteriza por flotar libremente. Sus hojas son anchas, gruesas, y ovaladas. Puede elevarse por encima de la superficie del agua hasta un metro de altura. Las hojas miden entre 10 y 20 cm de ancho, tiene tallos largos, esponjosos y bulbosos. Las raíces son plumosas y cuelgan libremente, y son de color negro púrpura.

Esta planta sirve de camuflaje ya que puede confundirse con la rana amazónica, sin embargo, en ella se dan vida muchas especies de insectos. Es una especie de rápido crecimiento y se reproduce principalmente mediante estolones. Cada planta puede producir miles de semillas anualmente. Su hábitat va desde zonas desérticas tropicales hasta subtropicales o desérticas templadas y cálidas hasta zonas de selva tropical. Un informe dice que contiene cianuro de hidrógeno, alcaloides y triterpenoides, lo cual puede inducir picazón al contacto.

El jacinto de agua crece y se reproduce con mucha rapidez, por lo que puede cubrir grandes porciones de aguas estancadas y lagos. Tiene la capacidad de coexistir fácilmente junto a otras plantas invasoras y nativas de un área. En el caso particular de los cuerpos de agua que ya han sido afectados por actividades humanas, como embalses artificiales, aguas estancadas o lagos eutrofizados que reciben grandes cantidades de nutrientes, resultan más vulnerables a la presencia de esta planta. A medida que los jacintos se multiplican formando esteras, pueden ser perjudiciales para muchas especies de peces e incluso llegar a obstruir las vías fluviales para la navegación y el transporte marítimo. El Pandanus tectorius no es nativo de América, sino de las regiones antes mencionadas, pero fue introducido en este continente y se ha cultivado en algunas zonas costeras tropicales donde se ha mantenido por su tolerancia a la salinidad y por sus raíces aéreas. Su fruto es más común en su área nativa, pero se puede lograr su cultivo en climas tropicales. La fruta del árbol de hala es redonda y comestible, aproximadamente de 20 cm de diámetro por 30 cm de largo.

Este árbol puede crecer hasta 9 m de alto, y se sujeta mediante raíces que lo fijan firmemente al terreno. Sus hojas miden entre 9-15 cm y 5-7 cm de ancho, con bordes en forma de sierra. El tronco es suave y se ramifica a media altura. Las flores masculinas son diferentes a las femeninas ya que éstas son pequeñas, muy fragantes y forman grupos o racimos que duran tan sólo un día. Las flores femeninas se parecen a una piña. El Pandanus necesita crecer en áreas calientes, húmedas, luz del sol parcial y suelo húmedo.
