The cocuy is an spirits that we could call "the genuinely Venezuelan liqueur". It is a distillate that is usually produced with a high alcohol content and that according to the characteristics of the area where it is made, it provides very special aromatic and gustatory notes. It also has an alcoholic degree of approximately 56

Its production and preparation are very similar to that of Mexican tequila, the simple fact that its origin is from agave gives rise to this thought, that is why in my country it is known as Venezuelan tequila.

Despite being a cultural heritage, this activity was considered illegal due to an unexpected change in the Law in 1974 which served to initiate a persecution of the producers of cocuy. A national crusade was undertaken, achieving the reform of the law in 2005, which was ratified in 2007. However, the permits for the production of this artisanal drink have been very difficult to obtain and all the national production was immersed in illegality Finally, on December 4, 2013, thanks to the start-up of a quality control laboratory and a bottling plant, eight of the artisans who produce the cocuy were distinguished with their definitive permits. However, there are still very few producers who have permits to make this liquor, which is why it is illegally sold in many places, making it even more desired by the population.

In my personal opinion I can tell you that the "cocuy" is a strong and very aromatic liquor, perfect to drink dry on cold nights, because it heats the body in a very fun way.
