There are times when a new card in Splinterlands doesn't feel like just another addition to the collection. Not because its stats are amazing, nor because it might become expensive someday, but because there is a human story behind it.
Usually, whenever a new card is announced, my mind immediately runs through the classic questions: “What are its stats? What abilities does it have? Is it worth it?” This time, the question feels a little different.
“Who will this card remind us of?”
Lumina is the daughter of Dwayne Cunningham. She lived with Walker-Warburg syndrome, while Dwayne and his family went through a long journey filled with challenges that were anything but easy.
Dwayne himself is no stranger to many longtime players. Through his content as Infidel1258, he helped many people discover Splinterlands. He was also involved as a volunteer with the SPS DAO Foundation, taking part in discussions surrounding proposals and ideas related to the development of the DAO and the game.
Splinterlands has announced that in early September, a special Land card created in honor of Lumina will be released.
What has already been announced is that the card's Regular Foil version will be available at max level for $35 for one week.
After that, the Special Foil version will follow.
Interestingly, at the time of this initial announcement, not all of the card's details had been revealed. So I don't want to pretend to know whether this card will become the most powerful production monster, have some particular ability, or become a must-have Land card.
We simply don't have all the information yet.
And that's exactly where I feel something is different.
Normally, I wait for a card announcement with a calculator in hand. This time, I'm more interested in waiting for the full story.
Because with a card like this, numbers aren't the only measure of its value.
What makes me even more interested is the purpose behind the card's release.
Splinterlands is also organizing a charity initiative to support Canuck Place Children's Hospice, which provided support to Lumina's family throughout her life.
That means this card isn't simply a digital object that will eventually find its way into someone's collection.
There is an effort to connect the gaming world with something real.
As a player, that changes the way I look at the purchase. Normally, I might buy a card because I want to strengthen my account, increase my Collection Power, or simply because I don't want to miss out on a new addition to my collection.
This time, there is another reason: to help preserve a memory while supporting an initiative genuinely intended to help children and their families.
Of course, every player has different circumstances and choices. Nobody has to buy the card.
But I think simply knowing the story behind it is enough to make us see the card differently.
I don't yet know exactly what Lumina's Land card will look like.
I don't know its stats.
I also don't know what the Special Foil version will look like.
But one thing is already clear: this card arrives carrying a story that is heavier than a mere Collection Power number.
And perhaps that's what makes it interesting.
Eight years of Splinterlands have produced thousands of cards. There are cards we chase because they're rare, cards we buy because they're powerful, and cards we keep because of the memories attached to them.
It's not because I knew Lumina personally. I didn't.
It's because a community witnessed her family's journey and then chose to remember her through something we all understand: a card.
If this card is released and you're interested in participating, don't look at it only as an investment or another addition to your collection. Read the story behind it, understand the purpose of the charity event, and participate according to your means.
Because this time, perhaps the most valuable thing a card can produce isn't what it can generate on Land.
It's the story it will continue to carry.
