Hello, Splinterlands warriors!
There is one bad habit I have as a Splinterlands player: I check token prices way too often. Even though I know that crypto prices can sometimes be like human moods—bright and sunny in the morning, cloudy at noon, and suddenly pouring rain in the afternoon.
This time, the token I’ve been watching is SPS (Splintershards), the main governance token in the Splinterlands ecosystem. SPS plays an important role in staking, governance, and various reward mechanisms within the game.
SPS has had quite a journey. The token was launched in 2021 and once reached more than US$1 during its peak. After that, its price went through an incredibly long decline, even dropping to around US$0.002680 in June 2026. So, looking at its history, SPS holders definitely need to have a pretty strong stomach.
I’m one of them.
Lately, I’ve started paying attention again to the price movements of SPS and DEC (Dark Energy Crystals). What caught my attention is that over roughly the last 60 days, SPS appears to have experienced a fairly significant increase, while DEC has also gone up but not by nearly as much.
For an ordinary player, it might just be another chart.
For me, someone holding around 22,329 SPS in staking, the story is a little different.
I still remember when I first bought a fairly large amount of SPS. At the time, I thought I had found a cheap price.
Turns out, I was wrong.
After I bought it, the price continued to fall.
That was when I learned a rather expensive lesson: a price that looks cheap is not necessarily the cheapest price.
Still, I don’t regret it too much because I continued using that SPS within the Splinterlands ecosystem. I still play every season, take part in battles, collect rewards, and use SPS for various account-related needs.
These days, I’ve chosen to put most of my SPS into staking.
For me, rather than letting the tokens just sit there, I’d rather let them work and generate rewards. Staking also provides benefits within the Splinterlands ecosystem, including increased governance influence and rewards-related benefits.
But I also realize that staking is not the same as putting money in a bank deposit.
The amount of SPS can increase, but its dollar value still depends on the market price.
If you ask me honestly, I’d say: not necessarily good, but I wouldn’t call it a failure either.
I’m happy to see the value of my holdings increase from around US$60–70 to US$82. But I don’t want to celebrate too quickly.
SPS is still a highly volatile crypto asset. The price can rise quite quickly, but it can fall just as quickly.
That’s why I’m no longer looking only at how much SPS I have. I’ve also started looking at how Splinterlands itself is developing.
In my opinion, this is the most important part.
If the ecosystem grows, players remain active, SPS usage increases, and the token gains stronger utility, then its investment potential becomes more interesting.
On the other hand, a high APR from staking won’t mean much if the token keeps losing value.
So I’m learning that APR is not the only thing worth looking at. Utility, game development, tokenomics, player numbers, and demand for SPS are just as important.
For now, I’ve decided to keep playing, keep staking, and continue watching how the ecosystem develops.
My advice: don’t buy SPS simply because you see its price going up. First understand the token’s utility, volatility risk, and the development of Splinterlands. If you genuinely believe in the ecosystem and are prepared to hold for the long term, staking can be a reasonable strategy.
As for my 22,329 SPS, I think my job is still pretty simple:
stake, play, collect, and be patient.
Let the market tell the rest of the story.
