Hitting the ball over the net | My entry for #Monomad Challenge [ENG-ESP]
Hello, black-and-white photography lovers on Hive!
If you are a sports fan, you surely know that the final stage of the US Open—one of the world's major tennis tournaments—is currently underway.
Personally, I confess that I have never been particularly drawn to tennis, but for professional reasons—as a sports psychologist—I have had to delve into the intricacies of the racket and the ball moving back and forth across the net.
Tennis is, in fact, one of the sports I work with as a psychologist. One of the ways I address specific aspects of the athletes' development is through photography and the analysis it enables.
Of course, I rely on other analytical tools as well, but photography is a perfect fit, allowing me to make the most of what it offers.
For one thing, as I am also a photographer, some of the photos I take during my fieldwork end up in my personal portfolio—intended for display in suitable venues like this one, and later in the occasional art gallery.
On the other hand, there is the psychological aspect of the analysis—for and within the context of sport. Here, I take the opportunity to blend a bit of both elements in what I am presenting to you.
These frames are from a training session with children from a high-performance sports academy, with whom I set out to implement proprioception exercises.
The idea is to attempt to correct certain postures—based on biomechanical analysis—during specific actions, with the aim of making the movement chain that drives successful offensive and defensive execution increasingly efficient.
We sometimes encounter coaches who expect their athletes to execute their movements correctly yet overlook the athlete's own perception of themselves and their actions. When we show them—through imagery—what we need them to analyze and process, achieving that goal becomes much easier.
That is why you will notice an emphasis on postures that catch your eye because they are seen as unusual—yet, in our work, we learn to evaluate them with the utmost discernment.
Since they are children, I try not to make the work tedious and aim to coax a smile or two out of them—this time, thanks to a photo I manage to capture perfectly for that purpose.
I won't dwell too much on the subject. I’d like to see if you notice anything—such as a specific stance—that either contributes to or hinders an effective ball strike.
In the meantime, I bid you all farewell with a warm, radiant embrace—until the next black-and-white frame—but not without reminding you: keep smiling!
