Fish Katakat is very much popular and a well-known loved dish in Karachi, specially in winters. There are numerous famous and popular restaurants for this item and you will find those places full and crowded most of the time. It’s because of their taste and some are just surviving because of their old name.
Since childhood, we used to eat Fish Katakat from Dhakhana. My Father used to tell us that they started with a small stall or cart and their taste makes them famous all over Karachi. They are one of the oldest fish katakat shop in Karachi. With all the fame, they upgraded time to time but still they didn’t make it luxurious place where people of high standards would prefer to go there. They have kept it simple and reasonable for a common man who can visit with his family and can enjoy the food.
Katakat refers to the sound which comes when cleaver is used to mash up or mix and cut fish/chicken/beef along with vegetables and some spices. This continues act of mixing things altogether creates a unique sound which is called Katakat.

Last month, my friends wanted to try something new so I recommended this place. It is there for more than 50 years wow it’s a real good time to maintain their taste and ingredients plus not getting expensive according to the market. They have some regular customers. I have seen this place so much crowded all the time. Luckily, when we visited this place last month, it wasn’t that much crowded.
One of my friend doesn’t eat fish but I convinced him to have some and try this Katakat and you won’t say you don’t like it. We have one example in my home who doesn’t eat fish but like this Fish Katakat because it’s something unique taste and not like just regular fish. Mainly, its because of their spices or maybe the taste comes from their Tawa lol not sure, whatever they do, it taste awesome.
I ordered three plates however, my friend who don’t like fish asked not to order for him but I was sure he would like it. And I was 100% correct. He just tasted and liked it. He was amused with the taste and it was really delicious.
Their sauce/chutney provided with the katakat is also unique. Its too spicy, gives a wonderful flavor when dipped with Katakat through Chapati.
Restaurant is upgraded but still they need to have a proper family hall or some A/C sitting area but they have their own mindset, I think they can easily build such a place but they are not doing it for some specific purpose. They want to remain the same in the eyes of customer by using the same cart. Well, maybe they are right about it. Who cares, they are still rocking with their taste and people of all standards still wait in their lines for their turn to buy and eat this delicious fish Katakat.
