The Man and the Tree

Trees give us shade on sunny summer days; give us flowers in the springs; some bear fruit. They can also give us firewood to keep us warm on cold winter nights or structure our homes.

In this park, located in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil, I have been walking since I was 10 years old. Here was a neighborhood football field. Since that time, I remember always standing under this tree listening to birdsong.

The relationship

At that time, a user of the place put up a sign asking others to keep the place clean.

The intervention

He did not imagine that such a request could be contradictory, given the way it was made: nailing a metal plate to the tree.

Today, 36 years later, this is learning.

Lesson

Every act we perform can bring consequences that will hurt others and ourselves. It is necessary to be aware that our physical space is established in the construction of the space of other individuals and other living beings.

Everything in nature teaches us. We just need to anticipate learning so that the consequences do not bring learning through pain, but through pleasure and satisfaction. The tree remains firm and strong.
