December 26, 2004: At 7.59 local time, a magnitude 9.7 to 9.7 magnitude earthquake shook the sea floor in southwest Sumatra, about 20 to 25 kilometers offshore. In just a few minutes, the tsunami waves from the earthquake hit the mainland of Africa.
December 27: The United Nations (UN) declared the tsunami in Aceh the greatest humanitarian disaster ever. International aid began to be moved towards the disaster area. The worst areas hit by the tsunami were Aceh, Khao Lak nias in Thailand and parts of Sri Lanka and India.
December 30: UN Secretary-General Khofi Annan says the toll at least 115,000 people have been killed. Germany sent a military plane that serves as an emergency clinic to the disaster area. The German Bundeswehr military is deployed to help victims of disaster in aceh.
December 31 Indonesia is declared as the worst tsunami disaster area. The Indonesian government calls the death toll to exceed 100,000.
January 1, 2005: US aircraft carrier "USS Abraham Lincoln" arrives in the waters of Sumatra to assist the evacuation of victims and the distribution of relief materials. US helicopters are deployed from aircraft carriers to distribute the most important medicines to the disaster area in Aceh
