Ah, it's that time of the year again - cold season. Wait what? What's a cold - haven't we just been living through COVID19? Well it appears that now that we're not wearing masks and no one is really paying attention, colds and flus are going around again as well as COVID. Sigh.
Jamie's been sick all weekend, and I have managed to avoid it by drinking lots of fire cider and garlic honey, but still, I woke up with a dry mouth, sore throat and that tingling in your nose that makes you know that a cold is coming on.
I decided to finally make some lozenges. I thought about it because I knew marshmellow was good for a sore throat, and then remembered it was also used as a binder in herbal lozenges. Then I raided my herbal cabinet wondering what else could work to address the issue - and this is what I came up with. The herbs were chosen for their soothing properties as well as their expectorant qualities, helping with mucus. Listening to Jamie cough in the other room made me think I didn't want it to get that far!)
- 8 parts powdered linden leaf (stuffy nose, sore throat, breathing problems, headaches, fever, expectorant)
- 2 parts powdered sage (antibacterial, manages sore throats)
- 2 parts rose petals (may soothe mild sore throats and open blocked bronchial tubes, cooling)
- 4 parts licorice (soothing, coating agent, and as an expectorant - also as a sweetener)
- 8 parts marshmellow root (coughs, bronchitis, addresses mucus)
- Very strong sage and linden tea - about 1/4 cup after reducing a cup of tea
Honey, about 2 tbsps
Extra powders for dusting - ginger, rose petal, hibiscus, orange peel powders are all yummy.
I used a spice grinder to grind the herbs to a powder. I also made a strong linden and sage tea, reduced to about 1/4 cup. The honey and the tea are used to mix it into a dough, so go easy until it reaches the consistancy you'd like.
Then, I rolled into balls in the palm of my hand and rolled in rose petals and ground ginger.
I then dehydrated them on low for a couple of hours, but really, I knew they'd all be gone fast so I needn't worry about mould.
Did they work? Well, I woke up this morning and felt good. Not only was my sore throat entirely gone but the cold seemed to have disappeared too. Coincidence? Maybe. Jamie took the rest to work today and he hasn't been coughing since.
Either way, better than running up the shop for sugary sweet cough lollies, right?
••PS No sympathy please - I am not even sick. I wrote this six weeks ago and forgot to post it 🤪😂
