Being popular on the internet and being qualified in a particular skill are two different things. A person who is known for discussing a particular topic and has a large following does not necessarily have to be qualified in that subject matter. It only means that the person has good communication skills and can create good content. Following such a person for advice on sensitive matters, such as one's health, should be strictly avoided, as anything that happens to one in the course of taking advice from such a person.
A lot of people, without any knowledge or qualifications, just pick a niche to talk about, do some research in preparation for the content they want to create, and then post it on their social media handles. This research may or may not be accurate, and because they have a following, they may tend to mislead their audience.
While some of these influencers are qualified and board-certified healthcare professionals who use the internet to help people live a healthy life, based on the oaths taken, they use the internet as a platform to be able to reach more people than they could reach physically on a normal day to educate them about their health.
The health influencers who may be qualified to give medical advice give advice that works on the generally public, they talk about the normally treatment or a way one can go about their health challenge, while this may work for some people, you should go to the hospital to see a physician and get tested first before taking any medication or treatment, I was discussing health with my friend sometime ago and he made me realise that it is wrong to treat an individual just from hearing the symptoms they individual is experiencing but rather, have them undergo a test to pin point the exact cause of the health challenge to be treated right, undergoing a treatment without testing the patient could led to suing the physician for malpractice.
In the same vein, a lot of these influencers who talk about finance and how to make wealth may or may not have the knowledge themselves on how to create wealth or even the experience of a failed business. It is said that even a person who has failed at something has a lot to teach or learn from. While this is true, some of these so-called wealth-creation influencers know nothing about starting a business; they talk more about failing or succeeding in one. They only use the audience they have to create content, creating traffic and a medium for them to be paid.
People listen to and trust these influencers mainly because they are easily accessible to them and can articulate information very well as a result of their strong communication skills or a team of grounded producers.
I will always choose to go to the hospital whenever I don’t understand my health rather than trust my health to an influencer; I always get tested at a health facility before I resort to taking any medication.
