When I was still in primary school, I wasn’t given pocket money to take to school in other to buy some snacks during break hours, my mother will only cook and put some in a food flask for me to take to school so that I will have something to eat during school break time in order not to look at others eating or be tempted to beg from other kids, by the time I was in primary 5, my school was not far from home any longer and will have the school gateman allow me go home during the long break to eat after I challenged my mother then that if she wasn’t going to be giving me pocket money to take to school, I will rather not take food to school but instead come home during break time to eat as I was already too big to be taking food to school.
At this time, I was so looking forward to secondary school, because myself and my father has talked about taking me to a boarding school, where I will be living on my own with other kids, I was so happy about this decision because in my mind, they will have no option rather than to give me some pocket money, since I will be far from home and will need to have money with me as it was not as easy as it is now to send money as it was back then.
On the day my mother dropped me at school, after we were done with registration and she was ready to go, my mother left me with a thousand naira (N1, 000) as my pocket money and also had my house master keep another two thousand naira in his possession for me, in case the one with me finishes. I was so excited, I could remember rushing to the school tuck shop to buy nothing in particular, on my way to the school shop was when I fainted, I only remembered getting up and finding myself surrounded by a lot of other school kids as myself asking me what happened and if I was okay, I was ashamed of my self as it was the first time in my life to have fainted and couldn’t really say what was wrong, maybe it was the over excitement I had thinking about the pocket money my mother gave me and that which she left with my guardian, maybe It was from being tired from the long journey. To date, I still remember how happy I was, having the dream of having pocket money and the freedom to do as I pleased with the funds.
