Photographing cycling looks easy… until you actually do it.
I’m a big fan of going to races and photographing this kind of event, but I always come prepared in case the action doesn’t unfold the way I expected. Because a race isn’t just about bicycles flying past at full speed. There are also the looks, the exhaustion, the details, the bikes, the hands, the waiting… those small moments that often end up telling the story better.
For these photographs, as with much of my work, I used vintage lenses. Some were taken with a Carl Zeiss Biometar 80mm, adapted from a Pentacon Six mount to Canon EOS EF so I could use it on my Canon 5D Mark III, and others with a Praktica 135mm f/2.8.
I enjoy working this way, with lenses that force me to look and anticipate a little more. It may not be the easiest way to photograph a race, but it is definitely one of the ways I enjoy the most.
