These images were shot outside Guys Hospital in Central London on two different days. The first in daylight and then I had the idea to shoot it at night, so back I went a week or so later.
Both are made using a technique called HDR (High Dynamic Range) which involves taking multiple exposures (e.g. -1, 0 and +1 stop apart) and later putting them together in software to ensure the whole dynamic range of tones are captured. This overcomes the problem of blown highlights and/or blocked out shadows in your final image.
I think I may have got away with a single exposure with the daylight image, but it was deinately required for the night image where there was a lot of contrast between the light and dark areas.
HDR images sometimes get a bad name as in the early days of the technique, they often looked over processed and too unrealistic. I was careful during the editing process to reduce that effect and the software to do this has improved somewhat over the years.
