Paul Fabritz is one of the best trainers out there. Widely respected and consulted by NBA players, coaches and trainers, he is well versed with the science behind training. Hence, when he says something, we should listen.

Many of my friends split their training into 3 phases: a skills period, a conditioning period and a game period. However, as Paul points out, the best way to condition your body is through actually playing games.

Also, from my experience, taking too much time away from basketball can be dangerous as when you step back onto the court, your body isn't well prepared to play basketball. What ends up happening is every athlete's worst nightmare: injuries. Personally, my sergeant in the army from my basic military training actually tore his meniscus after playing basketball after a long break, since he didn't have much time to play while fulfilling his army obligations. Mind you, he used to be one of the best players from Nanyang Polytechnic.

Hence, I think we should learn to see training as an entire package, and undersstand the correlation between physical conditioning, skills training and the act of playing the game itself. Often, these occur concomitently so in order to ensure we're not overloading (or underloading) ourselves, we really need to pay attention to all of these factors when planning our training.
