English:
It was an awfully chilly room. The windows were sloppily boarded up, letting little light escape from the cracks of the window. Me and Tank sat on the floor, legs and arms tied up. Judging from the yellow light coming from outside, it was probably noon.
We couldn’t move. Our hands had been roped up. This was nothing for Tank, who could break through the rope in an instant, no matter how strong. But his problem wasn’t with the rope, it was with the guard who sat at the door. The guard looked a scarry seven feet, wide as the doorway, and had a shotgun in his hands. Any wrong fidgeting could end our lives.
I was scared to death. I was afraid to talk or move, and I felt like crying.
But wait, you might be a tad confused. You could be asking, Sakie, how did you get into this situation!? You're a teenager for Christ's sake, and a scaredy one at that! Why are you and Tank tied up in a room with an armed guard?
Well ya’ see, it all started with my stupid ‘ability’.
Everybody gets their own ability at some point in their life. And I don’t mean if you’re really funny or can wiggle your ears or something. I mean a real power. Like maybe you can breath ice from your mouth, or have an indestructible body.
Growing up, everybody around me had a great power. My mother could walk on walls. My father had an electrical Super Ability.
You get your Super Ability from a time in your life when you are struggling greatly, and so, to survive, your body adapts to the situation and grants you a Super Ability.
For instance, my oldest sister Khala’s power is also electricity. She earned this power by squirting her water gun at an outlet. Mom hates this story strictly because Khala could have died, but Khala loves it because since then, she’s been able to zap people with huge volts of electricity. She’s never needed a plug to charge her phone and her body is immune to tazing, which is perfect for her since she’s a police officer.
Then there's my older sister Shella, who can speak with and understand animals. One day, when the family was taking a hike, we ran into a huge bear. Dad and Khala were ready to shock and kill it, but Shella, who has never liked killing anything, spoke to the bear, telling it to go away, that it was no match for us. When the bear actually went away, Mom and Dad adored Shella and said her Ability was amazing.
Though I thought my sisters’ powers were super cool, they also made me feel dwarfed. I was just some weird kid with braces, who loved fangirling over games and TV shows and spent most of the time with her face in front of a computer screen. One day, though, I would gain my ability, and maybe things would change.
One morning, I was just laying on my bed, dreading school. “Yo Sakie!? You up there!?” yelled a voice from outside.
I knew who that was. It was Tank, my best friend for who knows how long. I parted some window blinds to see he was standing on the hill that was our driveway, looking straight back at me. “It’s time for school y’know, and we’re almost late!”
I knew the routine. I said my que. “Coming! I’ve got no time to get downstairs, can you catch me?”
Tank smiled. “Sure!”
I was already dressed, so I just grabbed my bookbag, opened my window, and leaped out.
Though he tripped two steps back, Tank had caught me! I always got afraid that Tank would accidentally drop me someday, but I had no reason to be afraid. He had a strong grip and super strength, so he probably could have caught a car from that height.
We talked the whole way to school. Once we got there though, we split off. I was at my locker when I heard a weird echo of a voice.
Uh, there’s Sakie. Uh, I hate that girl. She’s so dumb.
I turned and there was Maya, an extremely tall girl from my class. There was no one beside her, but still, I had heard her voice loud and clear.
Imma hit her, just for the fun of it. I heard her say, but her mouth never opened.
Wait, was she gonna hit me. She was walking towards me, her beady brown eyes staring a whole through me and her mouth rolled up.
The moment she raised her hand I slid out of her way. She ended up punching my locker.
How’d she know I was gon’ hit her? I heard echoing through my mind again. It was like Maya was talking to me without opening her mouth or looking at me.
“Stop it, loser!” I yelled at Maya. “I can hear your thoughts, idiot.”
What? No, she can’t! Maya thought.
Wait, she can read minds? said a boy’s voice. I turned and saw a boy I knew from class staring at me. It had been Johnny's voice. A whole crowd of people were around me, each one of their mouths either opened in shock or closed, yet I heard the voices as if a whole school cafeteria was talking.
I started to breath hard. I ran to the nurses office, making sure to push past Maya.
“Nurse, I think I can read minds!” I said.
Someone got hurt this early in the school day? The nurse thought, but she said “What was that honey?”
“You were thinking that someone got hurt this early in the morning, in your head, right?”
She looked up. “Yes. how’d you know?”
“I told you, I think I can read minds,” I told the nurse yet again.
The nurse glared at me skeptically. “We’ll see. Let me take a study.”
The nurse left the room, but soon came back with the principal. “Principal Jayde, think of a random fruit.”
“O-kay….” said the principal. “I’ve got one.”
The nurse turned to me. “Well, go on, read her mind.”
“Bananas,” I said, staring at the principal closely. “She’s thinking of bananas.”
The principal's eyes widened. “That’s right! Nurse, I think we’ve got a mind reader at our school!”
“We sure do! She read my mind just before you!” the nurse agreed, then she turned to me. I’ll call your parents and tell them about it,” the Nurse smiled and nodded at me.
Wait! I was actually a mind reader!? A wave of happiness ran through my body.
“Tell my parents I got a Super ability, but don’t tell them what. I want to tell them,” I told the nurse.
As soon as I went back to class, I immediately felt slightly less happy.
I sat next to Carin, who was a levitater.
“What’s up Sakie? I heard you got your Super Ability today.” Said Carin.
“I did.”
“What is it?”
“Mind reading.”
“Mind reading!? Aw, can we trade powers!? I’d rather have that power!” exclaimed a boy from behind me. His power allowed him to teleport to wherever he wanted in the world. Why would he give up that amazing power for mine? I couldn’t levitate things. I couldn’t be in Mexico in two seconds and Puerto Rico the next. I just had stupid mind reading, a power nobody woud want.
When I went home that day, I felt even worse! I was going to have to tell my family, with their amazing powers, the weak one I got.
I found Mom on the ceiling, retrieving one of Dad’s socks that had somehow gotten stuck on one of the fan planks.
“And then, that bird told me he and his flock bathe there! I’m never swimming in the neighborhood pool again,” Shella was telling Dad.
Khala, still dressed up in her police get-up, was smiling up at Mom.
“Today, we caught one of the jewelry store robbers, Thomas Lankley. I absorbed all the power from the building and took out the lights, then electrocuted him with some volts to stop him.”
“Oh, nice job Khala. You make police work look fun!” Mom smiled down at Khala, who grinned.
Then Khala turned to me.
“Ah, there she is. Now, do we get to hear about your amazing new super power?” She asked.
“It isn’t amazing.” I mumbled. “It’s just mind reading.”
“Mind reading!?” My family looked around amongst each other, then Dad blew a raspberry and they all started to laugh.
I felt humiliated. “You guys think it’s that funny!? Here I am, getting an awful Ability, and all you guys wanna do is laugh!”
“We’re not laughing at you, we just think that power fits you so well!” said Dad.
I guess it did. I was pretty useless to begin with. I teared up and ran upstairs.
I hate myself, I thought. But of course, I could always hear my thoughts.
That next day was a Tuesday. I didn’t even wanna leave my room. I heard a knock on my room door.
“Sakie, Tank’s here!”
I sighed, and slowly got up from my bed and walked downstairs.
She looks awfully angry, which can’t be good, thought Mom. Another problem with mind reading. There was no off switch.
Tank, on the other hand, smiled at me. “What’s up?” he asked as we walked outside.
“Nothing. Just learning to deal with this awful power I’ve got.” I told him.
“Oh, you got your Super Ability? What’chu get?” he asked me.
I frowned at him. Mind reading, and I hate myself for it!” I told him.
“Woah, you shouldn’t hate yourself, Sakie. All just because you got an Ability you didn’t want?”
“No, because I’m lazy, useless, and uncool on top of having a bad Super Ability!” I spat. “I’m just not good all around.”
“That’s not true,” Tank argued.
That stupid police woman locked up my buddy Thomas.
I looked around. The thoughts I had just heard had a deep, rocky voice. I looked around in confusion.
The only other person on that street besides me and Tank was some pot bellied man with white hair, and big green eyes. The way he stared at me rubbed me the wrong way.
I’m gonna kill that police woman, He thought.
A wave of cold rush through me. That Thomas guy he was thinking about was just the guy my sister had arrested yesterday, right?
Oh gosh, this man wanted to kill my sister.
I quickly pulled Tank’s muscular arm aside. “Tank! See that guy over there!?”
Tank side-eyed the potbelly at the other side of the road.
“Yeah, what about him?”
He wants to kill my sister. I heard his thoughts!” I explained.
Tanks eyes widened. you can read people's minds from far away!?
“That wasn’t far away, but anyway, we have to do something!” I told him.
“Right,” Tank nodded and he looked at potbelly again. “How about… I throw a car at him?”
Though that man did say he was going kill my sister, that sounded way too violent. “Wait, I’ve got an idea.”
I whispered it into Tank’s ear, and he nodded.
While Tank walked back home to grab a weight off one of his dumbbells, I began to scribble a note in green marker.
Hey, You.
I know you want to kill my sister. And that’s not going to happen.
I am her private assassin working on the police force as well. I know your thoughts.
Stay away from my sister.
That’s when Tank came back with the dumbbell. “Alright, got it!”
“Okay! This should do the trick.” I said as soon as I finished the letter. I took the note, slapped it onto the dumbbell, and handed it to Tank.
“Go ahead, Tank.”
Tank then threw the dumbbell at the Potbelly. It bonked of his head and he fell over.
Tank covered his mouth, but his laugh was already fizzling out.
I smiled, and laughed as quietly as I could manage.
Then Tank started to laugh, and then we ran and laughed all the way to school.
That day at school, the three, terrible words echoed through my head again.
I hate myself.
I hated the way that I barely finished my schoolwork on time. Or that I spent more time in my head than I did paying attention to class. But it was so fun to imagine that I had electricity powers like my father and sister, or some other cool power instead of what I actually got. It didn’t help that now I could hear all the other kid’s thoughts as well at random times.
I need to find a way to control this, I thought.
When I went to go sit with Tank for lunch that day, he was acting very strange. The moment I sat down he got up and said he actually wanted to sit with some other friends on his sports team. I wasn’t too offended, but I did think, why didn’t he want to sit with me? He must have finally figured out that I was dumb after all.
Still though, I wanted to know for sure why he had avoided me, so after school I went to talk to him.
He was one of the last kids to leave the school so I waited for him.
“Hey, Tank!” I smiled and started to match his stride.
“Oh…hey Sakie.” Tank started to walk faster.
I picked up speed. “Tank, why are you avoiding me?”
That’s when a bag went over his head.
“Tank!” I yelled, and then suddenly a bag was rushed over my head, burning my nose as the scratchy fabric wished by my face.
AHHHHH! HELP!” I shrieked, but nobody heard me. Next thing I knew I had been swooped off my feet and turned on my sides.
We were thrown onto some type of leather seats, and I kept screaming, no matter what happened. I knew Tank was somewhere around me, thanks to my weak ability.
What just happened!? Who did this!? Where’s Sakie? Tank’s mind was congested, thoughts rapidly being written over each other.
All I knew was that the engine of the car started, and it began to drive.
I didn’t know where we were going, or what direction, or even how many people were in the car. All I knew was that I regretted waiting until most people were gone to talk to Tank. Never again would I risk my life to talk to a friend.
The car stopped abruptly and I rolled off the backseat and onto what should have been the floor, but the “Ouch!” I heard, said otherwise.
Ah! Who’s this!? Is this… Sakie? These thoughts were loud, so I knew they were close. I had rolled onto Tank, who had been lodged on the floor. How more embarrassing could this get!?
We were picked up, and I heard the car door slam. Feet cracking against pavement. My heart was racing the whole time.
Next thing I knew, I had been dropped.
And THAT’s how I found myself in an empty room, hands and feet tied up, a guard with a shotgun at the door.
The Pot-bellied man was giving me and Tank a smug smile. “You two think y’all can interfere with my plan of killing that cop? Well, I kill you both!” He laughed.
My heart raced, and I started breathing harder. This man was a psychopath, and instead of telling an adult, me and Tank thought we could handle a psycho ourselves! We were so stupid, too stupid!
Uh! I hate myself! Why am I so dumb!? I was too stupid to just simply tell an adult about this guy wanting to kill my sister. Now I’m going to die.
I started to cry.
“Oh shut up!” Yelled the Potbelly. “You weren’t crying when you threw a dumbbell at my face.
Heh. Now that I’ve scared those two, I’m going to go try to rob a bank in the other county. Then I can torment that police woman into giving herself up by using these two as ransom. Ha! I’m just too smart!
Potbelly turned to the guard. “Watch these two until I get back. If they try anything funny, like using their Super Abilities to leave, put a bullet in them, but don’t kill them.”
Then Potbelly left.
Tank was breathing really hard. He sided over to me. “This man means to kill us!”
“No he doesn’t,” I told him. “He’s bluffing, I read his mind. Wait a second, if I read his mind…”
I read the guard’s mind.
Turns out he needed to use the bathroom, but he was keeping quiet. I made a point to talk to Tank about water until the guard said that he was going to use the bathroom, but wanted no funny business from me and Tank.
As soon as the guard left, Tank used his strength to break his leg and hand ropes, and untied me as well. Then we simply kicked down the door and left.
We ran to my house and told my father everything about the Potbellied man, who had kidnapped us. My father was furious, and had actually told me to tell him where that man’s house was.
When I didn’t know, Tank jumped in and told him exactly where Potbelly’s house was.
The guard ended up in jail, and my Dad had ended up shocking Potbelly to death, his only words being “No one messes with my daughter,” Afterwards.
Tank was reunited with his family, and Me with mine. Tears, hugs and kisses were exchanged.
Khayla leaned down on one knee to meet my eye level. “You’re a real hero, Sakie. Not only did you save my life, but you saved Tank’s life too. All because of your wonderful Ability. Gosh I wish I could read minds.”
Khala’s words really made what I just did set in my mind. Not only had I just saved two lives besides my own, but I had done it with my Super Ability, which was a pretty cool talent if I thought about it.
Then I thought about all those times I had thought or said I hate myself. I didn’t truly hate myself, did I? Sure I was very lazy, but I could fix being lazy. I loved myself, I loved my looks, my smarts, everything. Never again would I say (or think!) I hate myself.
That’s when I decided that even if I didn’t think mind reading was the best ability, it was the ability that I had, and it had saved me multiple times from danger, not to mention other people's lives as well. No matter what, I’d learn to love my ability!
The next day at school, I walked over to Tank to talk to him about why he had been avoiding me. Ever since I had gotten my Special Ability, he had been avoiding me. Today I’d find out why.
The class was a buzz when I walked in this morning so I used this time to walk over to Tank and settle things.
“Tank, I feel like you’ve been avoiding me.”
His eyes widened as he turned to me, then he turned to stare at his desk. He sighed. “To be honest, I kinda have been avoiding you.”
My heart raced. “Why?”
“Because, Sakie, you can read minds now. And if you read my mind, you’d find out the truth.”
“The truth about what!?” I asked.
And he turned to me.
The truth is that I like you, his mind said.
I was surprised.
“I-I like you too,” I told Tank.
Then we smiled at each other and held hands.
When I got home, I immediately told my family about what I learned about Tank.
“I knew that you would get a boyfriend soon, Sakie. You’re so pretty and smart!”
“Really?” I asked her. “I would've never thought so.”
Shella joined in. “You think too lowly of yourself sis. If I looked half as pretty as you, boys would be falling for me. You’re awesome!”
When I thought about it, I was awesome. So I’m lazy, big deal. I’ll work towards being more industrious! After all, when you really think about it, how could I really hate myself if I was so amazing!?
I didn’t. I loved myself.
~ END ~
Espanol:
No podíamos movernos. Nuestras manos estaban atadas.
Odio a esa chica.
Espera, iba a pegarme.
"Detenerlo, perdedor!"Le grité a Maya.
Empecé a respirar fuerte.
No podía levitar cosas.
Me sentí humillada.
No había apagado.
Tank, por otro lado, me sonrió. "¿Qué pasa?"preguntó mientras caminábamos afuera.
“Nada.
¿Qué conseguiste?"me preguntó.
"Woah, no deberías odiarte a ti misma, Sakie.
Esa estúpida policía encerró a mi amigo Thomas.
Miré a mi alrededor. Miré a mi alrededor confundido.
Voy a matar a esa mujer policía, Pensó.
"Tanque!
Quiere matar a mi hermana.
Bien-asintió Tank y volvió a mirar a barrigón.
"Adelante, Tank.”
Me odio a mí mismo.
He cogido velocidad.
Uh! Me odio a mí mismo! Ahora voy a morir.
Empecé a llorar.
Me odio a mí mismo.
¡No importa qué, aprendería a amar mi habilidad!
"Tank, siento que me has estado evitando.”
Me sorprendió.
No, me amaba a mí mismo.
