It was in Late September 5 years ago, that my journey of secondary school began in NINLAN Demonstration Secondary School located in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. It wasn’t really very easy for me to adapt to the changes that came alongside the school – the making of new friends, increase in knowledge and also the awareness of some of the traits in humans.
During my first year in the school, we the intakes were a lot and due to that I made a lot of mates of my age and we got along together so well, we played together, we might not even know each other so well but we got along just with the fact that we are mates of the same class and we shared one thing in common – AMBITION. We usually get in a lot of troubles too with a lot of Senior in higher classes, Teachers and also among ourselves but still we make up with ourselves and still kept on pushing.
Time flew and we took our school examinations for the three terms, my results for the first term of the session made a lot of my friends and classmates to set limits with me and also know their place when it comes to some issues because it helped them to know that I too, was among those intelligent ones who did not allow other unnecessary things to distract them from reading their books and doing well academically.
In a twinkle of an eye, we entered into the next year or you can call it class. We all didn’t enter though as some left the school to join another school while others weren’t promoted as their scores didn’t reach up to or exceed the average mark of the school. We kept on pushing and kept on reading our books as well, but some of my classmates too starting becoming immoral. Just as the senior students do have girlfriends and boyfriends in school, my mates in class too decided to follow those footsteps and they gradually started skipping classes just to be with their girlfriends and so on. For me, I had limits and having a girlfriend wasn’t my thing, so I overlooked their behaviors and focused on my life in school.
I graduated into the third class with my friends too though we kept on reducing in number as some kept on moving out of the school due to reasons best known to them alone. This class was the highest class of the Junior Secondary school and was also the class where the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was to be written, so a lot of studies and preparations were made for us during that time in order to equip us to write well in the examination as well as make the school proud.
The day came for the examination to commence and we all were filled with fear within us because it was actually the first time for us to writ an external examination in that school, but as we took the first and subsequent exams, we all became relaxed and kept reading our books as well. But we dreaded the day we would depart when we are done with the exams. But still we can’t fasten time neither can we make it go slower, so that day came and we all bed ourselves goodbye as we won’t be seeing each other for the next three months. It was really emotional as some even had to shed tears to express how they feel about not having the opportunity to see their friends for the next few months.
Well, the holiday seemed like a week to us when we all came back to the Senior Secondary School One. We kept on hugging ourselves again and talking about events that has happened during the time we were apart and then setting plans as to how we are going to go through the new class.
It wasn’t easy to adapt to changes in Subjects and dress as well which came alongside the new class. But as newbies we just kept on adapting and we really got it well. We kept studying hard too while having the thinking that there is really light at the end of the tunnel which we were moving on. Our results really showed or proved too that we were doing pretty well.
Days went by, weeks went by and so did months as well and we graduated into the second year of the senior secondary school. I was asked by the school, to join the science class due to my performances in the science subjects which I did offer during our first class. To be in a science class wasn’t that easy though but I kept on pushing and trying hard. Not long enough, a girl of my age named Jessica too joined us and she really got my attention as we would read together and talk together as well. Well, you can conclude that she was my Bestie meaning Best Friend Forever.
During the third term of this session of the SS2 class which started this May, I tried a lot and relied on Jehovah to help me pass into the examination class SS3 which was the class for writing the Western Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) exam and the National Examination Council (NECO). Also the school increased the average cut off mark of each student in SS2 from 45 to 50 thereby making it difficult for the students who didn't read to be promoted to the Examination class.
The 26th of July was the day we ended our last exams for the SS2 class though the exams was tough but we still have hope of success and also it marks the end of a successful Era and also it reveals the Beginning of a new Era for us the 2024/2025 SET OF SS3 STUDENTS.
I pray and wish that we all will get to the end of this 6 years Journey, the of the tunnel of Secondary School and atlas smile at our certificates which would be handed over to us at our Honored Prize-Giving Ceremony.
