A inicios de los 90´s, una agrupación comenzó a escucharse mucho en las emisoras de radio y pronto se convertirían en muy famosos, no sólo por su estilo de música pegajosa y alegre sino por la estrategia de marketing que usaron para promocionar su disco “Discovery”.
El tema “One More Time” es difícil de olvidar para quienes escuchamos la canción por primera vez y aún más difícil de olvidar fue el video que lo promocionaba: una banda de personajes en anime, cantando el tema.
Este video formó parte de otros tantos que acompañaron a cada uno de los temas del disco, formando entre todos, una película completa llamada Interestella 5555.
En ella se relata como una banda de jóvenes alienígenas, todos con color de piel azul, son secuestrados en medio de un concierto y llevados a la Tierra para trabajar bajo las órdenes de un sujeto misterioso que quería hacerse con los discos de oro que ganaban las bandas para reclamar un poder y dominar el universo.
El diseño de personajes estuvo a cargo de Leiji Matsumoto. ¡Realmente su estilo de diseño era único! La primera vez que vi el video, enseguida supe que debía que haber trabajado en ese video porque tenía un sello único, difícil de imitar. Sus personajes son siempre muy estilizados, sobre todos los personajes femeninos. Los personajes masculinos resultan bastante atractivos y los personajes de soporte tienen a ser muy caricaturizados.
Adicionalmente, Matsumoto era muy conocido por sus interesantes historias de aventuras espaciales y Interestella 5555 no fue la excepción. Había acción, aventura y romance.
La producción estuvo a cargo de la Toei Animation así que la calidad de animación es impresionante no sólo por los efectos sino por la fluidez de movimientos.
Como empecé recientemente un reto personal de hacer bocetos a color a diario, para mejorar la velocidad del coloreado, hice el boceto de uno de los personajes: Arpegius.
Él es el guitarrista de la banda e intentó escaparse cuando a todos los durmieron con un gas para llevárselos a la Tierra. Desafortunadamente también su atrapado y llevado junto con sus amigos donde no sólo les cambian el aspecto físico para que parezcan humanos, sino que les borran los recuerdos y los reprograman para que sean como máquinas de trabajo.
Me gustaría más adelante hacer esta ilustración con un lineart más limpio y usando colores sólidos al estilo del anime. Usé brochas de acuarela opaca para colorear y fue una excelente opción para cubrir superficie de manera rápida. El lineart lo hice con lápiz en lugar de plumilla.

In the early 90s, a group started to be heard a lot on the radio stations and they would soon become very famous, not only for their catchy and cheerful style of music but also for the marketing strategy they used to promote their album "Discovery".
The song "One More Time" is difficult to forget for those of us who heard the song for the first time, and even more difficult to forget was the video that promoted it: a band of anime characters singing the song.
This video was part of many others that accompanied each of the songs on the album, forming together a complete movie called "Interstella 5555".
It tells the story of a band of young aliens, all with blue skin, who are kidnapped in the middle of a concert and taken to Earth to work under the orders of a mysterious individual who wanted to claim the gold records that the bands were winning in order to claim power and dominate the universe.
The character design was done by Leiji Matsumoto. His design style was truly unique! The first time I saw the video, I immediately knew that he must have worked on it because it had a unique stamp, difficult to imitate. His characters are always very stylized, especially the female characters. The male characters are quite attractive and the supporting characters tend to be caricatured.
Additionally, Matsumoto was well-known for his interesting space adventure stories, and "Interstella 5555" was no exception. There was action, adventure, and romance.
The production was done by Toei Animation, so the animation quality is impressive not only for the effects but also for the fluidity of movements.
As I recently started a personal challenge of making daily colored sketches to improve coloring speed, I made a sketch of one of the characters: Arpegius.
He is the guitarist of the band and tried to escape when they all were put to sleep with a gas to be taken to Earth. Unfortunately, he is also captured and taken along with his friends, where not only their physical appearance is changed to look like humans, but also their memories are erased and they are reprogrammed to be like work machines.
I would like to make this illustration later with cleaner lineart and using solid colors in the style of anime. I used opaque watercolor brushes for coloring, and it was an excellent choice for quickly covering the surface. I did the lineart with a pencil instead of a pen.
